nuba needs duncan advice

I have a black mexican HSH strat: JB, stock and Jazz.

This is the second time I attempt to modify a guitar. I installed the JB and the Jazz on my first guitar. And I have to say compared to the original stock bridge humbucker, duncans come out as nothing short of awesomo.

What I need is a single duncan to go in the middle... but the choices are so many that I feel completely overwelmed.

Since I already have 2 hb I thought a nice colorful and noiseless single coil pick up would allow me to have a nice classic strat sound. Help me decide!

I've been thinking about a "Classic Stack Plus STK-S4" but that is just because It says classic and noiseless, but I know nothing....

In another novela mexicana: I have just recently adquired a white mexican strat with a single Invader on the bridge. Looks hot, sounds hot... to hot for me to handle... I thinking of changing, I love the JB sound but I dont want two guitars the same. I thought of Distortion, Custom, Pearly?

I was thinking of setting it up in a SSS config. for aestetic reasons (childhood dreams with waynes excalibur). For that I tot of setting up a single-coil-sized humbucker @ the brigde and 2 other duncan singles.

As far as tones I am looking forward to play Hendrix, Paige, Metallica, Nirvana... So I guess I need flexibility... I have a SCXD

Help
thanks

"Tone Rider pure vintage pickups" singles...

Anyone know anything about them... to which duncans would they be similar to?

Thanks,

if you want a classic fendery strat tone with no hum, the classic stack plus is a good choice. i have a set of them in a strat and they sound great.

for the other guitar i might suggest alnico II pro single coils and a lil 59 in the bridge. nice warm strat tones with a little extra kick in the bridge.

i have never tried the tonerider pups but from what i have heard they are decent vintage style pups

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

Thanks a lot mate!

I am still divided between a compact hb or a full size...
This weekend I will try to sit down and go thru all the samples and the tone chart.
If you would please let me know anything you think I should know... when choosing between this bridge hbs:

59
Pearly
Custom
Distortion

Thanks again!
Peter

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

if you are matching the humbucker with vintage toned single coils then i would suggest the pearly gates (my favorite) or the 59 rather than the custom or distortion for better balance.

i usually prefer a full size humbucker over the single coil size although the smaller variety can match up well with single coils.

if you want a fairly balanced output across the guitar and use something like the ssl1 then a 59 is a good choice, if you use a hotter single coil like a ssl5 then the custom can be a good option. if you use the bridge humbucker as a lead pup and dont mind the fact that it hits the amp alot harder than a distortion can be great in the bridge of a strat. lots of options out there.

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

I cant find a *black* pearly gates/bridge for sale!
(is it ok to install a pg on the bridge on a strat?)
also couldnt find an white ssl-1/neck anywhere on the internet... bummer

tips welcomed

Pearly Gates:

SSL-1:

SSL-1's don't come in neck/bridge versions, and don't come with covers. Your mexican strat pickup cover probably won't fit (different pole spacing). These covers will fit:

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

Ok, Ive bought the PG finally... I cant wait!

Now with the SSL-1 I dont have to worry about the RWRP I guess... neck, middle, bridge are all the same then... I will install on neck

With the SSL-5 I found there is a special one for middle:

is this resonable?

One last thing, would this setup be enought to hook it all up on my MIM or am I missing something:

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

If I setup the pg without a tone control dial would that be equivalent to the tone setting to be 10 / maximum?

thanks,

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

the rw/rp ssl1 is typically used as a middle pup with three single coils. if you use a bridge bucker then you would want one 'normal' ssl1 and one rw/rp but i think youd use the rw/rp in the neck.

running the pg without a tone control will be like running the tone control on 11. it will be a little brighter and more open than if you had the tone attached and on 10

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

I was planning on PGb > ssl-5m (tapped?) rwrp > ssl-1n

So I can go ahead and get a simple ssl-1... is there a good reason to get the ssl-5 rwrp for the middle?

This Ive just posted elsewhere:

so if I would get a SSL-5 I could use the "tapped" wire to use the pup @ 50% with 6.6k output, instead of the full 12k output?

That would be best to more evenly match the ssl-1n 6.5k and the PGb with 8.3k ?

thanks...

Hi Jeremy, I am sorry for asking again but I need to know before I make a purchase:
In a [PGb | SSL-5m | SSL-1n] configuration why would I set the RWRP in the neck instead of the middle?

Thanks,

Re: nuba needs duncan advice

to get humcancelling with two single coils you want the pups to be rw/rp
im pretty sure that you want a normal single coil in the middle to be in phase with the humbucker
so by putting the rw/rp in the neck you get everything to be in phase and get humcancelling when neck and middle are selected
