Nut filing for a guitar with fret zero

Dear All,

I have been working in a project guitar (Harmony H-802) that has a "fret zero" before the nut. I could not find a clear source of information for how to proceed with the filing of the nut and I would like to validate with you my assumptions:

  • The strings should all lay over/touch the fret zero. There is where the strings will angle towards the tuners.
  • The filings in the nut should go a little below the height of the fret zero.

Would you have any other important point to consider? In case I'm correct, how below the fret zero should I carve the nut?

Any experience shared will be very welcome!

Have a nice day.

The "nut" behind the zero fret is just a guide to keep the strings in place
I couldn't imagine it being taller than the fret
And should slope back towards the tuners

Dear EHD, thank you for your reply.

Yes, it seems my initial assumptions are not wrong. I'm filling the nut until below the level of the fret zero, what will creat an angle towards the tuners.

Would you have any recommendation/previous experience with that? How much below the fret zero would you go in the but carvings?

Thank you.
