Re: Nut Problem

Should be super cheap and easy from a tech if that's all you want. I would not try the G string approach. Depth and width can impact this, regarding how the string performs. But maybe others disagree.

Right tool for the job, which to me means take it in.

Might want to rethink the thread title...

Re: Nut Problem

Valve lapping compound is the quickest and cheapest method for deepening slots. Take a string that corresponds to the slot, you can even use plain ones. Put some compound into the slot with a needle and start flossing. It will cut very quickly. It can be a mess though so try to be careful.

It is not the best btw, because it might stain the nut or too much pressure might embed the compound into the nut and it will rust and possible ruin your strings. Bone is less suspectible to this if it's not porous too much. Again, go slow. Polymers usually don't stain, bone does a little. Soak it in naphta over night.

This is probably the simplest way as resources go, because lapping compounds go for 2-3 USD and you can get at any auto parts store. When I started doing repair work I made at least 10 nuts this way and it works. You can use a jigsaw to hold the string. Put some solder on the ends of thinner strings to build some material to hold on.

Re: Nut Problem

Yes, what an awful title, sort of grabs you by the boo-boo.

Re: Nut Problem

I was going to answer "Bull Testicles" - gives more beef to your tone.

-BUT_

An risky answer would be to use a set of torch tip cleaners (the closest sized cleaner), but if you need to ask its probably better you get a tech to do the surgery.

Re: Nut Problem

Either do the job yourself or take it to a tech.

Re: Nut Problem

thanks for the feedback good sirs, cant be more than 10 bucks at the place, ya think?

somehow i knew the thread title couldve been different, but seemed accurate haha.

Re: Nut Problem

Another easy option is to get an old Junior Hacksaw blade - one for cutting metal. Use a hammer to tap out the set. Then use that to put a little relief into the back edge of the nut to make the string sit down a touch. All being well, that should be just enough to stop the string popping up.
