I grew up playing on a classical and it's probably my favorite nut width (the wider the better)

Ideally ... 2 inches

but I'll settle for 1-11/16, or 1-3/4

i couldnt tell you what i have or what i've played or what i prefer ... is the extra 1/16th of an inch, spread out over the entire width of the board, really that noticeable? ...

An even smaller difference is noticable...slimmer necks tend to be faster, but also cost endurance...

a difference of about 0.020" in the thickness or about 0.050" in the width of a neck can/will make an obvious difference, depending on the profile ;)

wow - who knew? :D ... i think back to the days when guitars were made largely by hand ... were the QC tolerances that good back in the day when the vintage axes were new? .. were every (or even most) '58 les pauls or '52 teles or '54 strats built to within .2" of thickness and 0.5" of width?

That's why i love making necks by hand..... each one comes out slightly different..... I really like making my own strat necks with a hard V shape.... More so then the Claptons... A tele neck i made with a V shape was really well liked by all of the guys at a local guitar store......

???? I think in that case you probably have 1 5/8 and 1 11/16.... If you take a look at what you just said, you´ll see why... (Tip: 1 3/4" is WIDER than 1 11/16 ;))

is it really? haha. i thought ESP used something different from 1 5/8....guess not. ill edit my post

I dunno what ESPs exact specs are (nor do I really want to), but the way around that you originally wrote it is logically flawed (or at least confusing)

Your explorer should be 1 11/16, most USA ´Slingers were 1 5/8 IIRC....if that helps any (In my experience rulers, calipers or other measuring tools are usually best for this type of thing :laugh2: )

I use 1 11/16 on everything, regardless of scale length. One of the reasons my Wolfgang will be up for sale soon is that the 1 5/8 nut width is just too cramped for me to play comfortably in the first few positions. You'd be surprised how much of a difference that extra 1/16 of an inch can make. I don't think I'd want anything wider than 1 11/16, but I just can't play comfortably on anything narrower.
