New ( used ) Vox Practice amp Day! I'm going to put my 65 amps treble boost in front of it later and see if I can cop some Brian May tone.

Is that a thinly veiled insult? LOL..It does sound very good.I could do w/o the gaudy Vox badge..might take it off.That gold strip dwn the middle also is pretty 'bleh'.
Tell you what ..it inspires me to practice.Ive been playing for an hour. This has got me jonesing for a Class 5 Marshall combo, for basically the same reason. I hate to turn on my behemoth amps anymore just for noodling and practice.

Not at all, I think it's great. (Sans the gold). I'm glad you dig it. I picked up one of those 5w bugera tube amps with power scaling and it makes practicing the best part of my day.

Cool Vox. I even think the gold looks good on it.

What's that Crate off to the right? Looks like it might be about twenty years old.

Yes Sir, That Crate is a Lee Jackson designed St. Louis Music Hot Rod Marshall 4x6v6 amp from the 90's. It a little Boogie Killer. It really cooks. Lee Jackson is an original amp Guru from the Van Halen Hot rod Plexi days in SOCAL, with a bit of a sketchy reputation for hacking up old ex Plexis, then went to Austin Tx.
He produced the "Metaltronix" line of Hot Rod Marshalls, and now he produces a line of other Hot Rod Marshall and 18 watt Marshall type amps I believe.
This amp, the "Crate Stealth" is a little 'sleeper', and a bargain ,and will acquit itself well on some much more expensive noteworthy modified Marshall amps. It seems to be pretty well made..probably like an older Peavy?

That won't get the BM sound, because the amp seems to be built around the AC30 Top Boost channel. Brian May only ever played into the AC30's Normal channel, which was dark and not as gainy, thus the Treble Booster provided the extra top end and gain.

By all means try a treble booster up front, but a full-range booster would probably sound much better. A treble booster will provide the extra gain but probably sound too bright.

Btw, the gold parts are a huge part of the vintage Vox vibe. If it was mine, I'd replace the grille cloth with the Vox diamond-pattern cloth to get it even closer to the original amps.
