A couple of weeks ago, my old Hendrix Crybaby decided to stop cooperating. When I’d stomp to engage, it would kill most of the signal, resulting in weak output and an unusable tone. I had always disliked having to push down enough to click the button and to be forced to start with the all-treble side of the way when it engaged, so I started doing a little looking around and came across the Crybaby 95Q.
I found one on Reverb for $127 or so and made a lower offer, but the seller wasn’t willing to come down. A few days later, another one popped up for $80, but it didn’t include shipping. For that discount, though, I decided I’d take whatever hit UPS was going to send my way. I’d post pics, but I can’t believe anyone reading this doesn’t know what a Crybaby looks like.
My initial impression is that I need to do a little dialing in with the Q, and it might need to come down a hair on the volume when engaged, but operating it is like I’ve always imagined a wah pedal should work. For anyone unfamiliar, its rest position is fully upright, and it engages as soon as the pedal starts to be pressed down. While you’re rocking it, it does its wahing, and when you take your foot off, it shuts up, just like it should. Huge step up in usability.
I may have to start learning some Hammett solos now.
