NYE gig video: Lonely End of the Rink

Re: NYE gig video: Lonely End of the Rink

Yeah, it is a good video. Lots of camera angles. Did you just set up three cameras and let 'em roll, then edit later?

I'm not all that familiar with The Tragically Hip, but you guys sound awesome! How long have you guys been together?

Merci Monsieur Messier.

Yup, three cams on tripods all rolling the entire show. The singer did the editing on his computer. He did a great job.

We've been together since April 2008. It's been tons of fun. I love being in a band where everyone is pulling their weight musically and otherwise.

That's a very satisfying feeling, I'm sure. Do you see the crowds growing? Are you getting better gigs along the way? Does it come in waves?

Re: NYE gig video: Lonely End of the Rink

The gigs are definitely better. We're doing headline slots or full nights now as opposed to opening. We're now starting to branch out to new venues in the region. Crowds are highly variable. We aren't known by name yet, so the crowds we get are mostly there for other reasons, like we're on after the hockey game or UFC pay-per-view. The venues we play love us, because they tend to sell lots of drinks when we play.

I predict 2009 will be a great year for us.

I recall you saying at one point (and I'm probably paraphrasing here), "In Canada, The Tragically Hip are as big as The Beatles." Is that true? Does pretty much everyone know who they are and at least a few of their songs? If so, their popularity alone must be a big draw for a tribute band.

Yes, they're huge here. I do remember saying that. They can easily sell out the biggest venue in town when they tour, and they put on an excellent live show. Their albums are great, but they do not do the live show justice. We try to replicate that experience as best as possible. We study YouTubes of live performances when we're rehearsing.

Their singles from 1989 - 1994 are all rock radio staples in Canada. Their more recent albums do pretty well, but they mostly get by on touring these days. Grab any Canadian aged 20 - 40 off the street, and you could probably get them to sing part of at least one Hip song. We get a lot of people singing along when we do one of their popular tunes, and that's really cool to see.

The song in the video is from their latest (2006) album, World Container. I don't think it was even a single, but it's a seriously kick-ass song.

Re: NYE gig video: Lonely End of the Rink

With our participation in tribute bands, you and I share something big in common. We should trade off ideas, share what works and what doesn't, that sort of thing.

I'm glad to hear your band is starting to gather a following.
