Oak As A Guitar Wood

Re: Oak As A Guitar Wood

Brian May's Red Special was supposedly made from a VERY old English oak mantle piece. My brother has a lot of furniture made from the stuff and it looks VERY different from typical American White, Red or Live Oak. LOTS of figure, including some quartersawn stuf with BIG wide tiger stripes. Problem would be finding it and it would be an expensive experiement, particularly if you weren't able to reproduce Mr. May's results:laugh2:

Re: Oak As A Guitar Wood

What about wood from sycamore trees? There seems to be plenty of those around too here. A tree that recently got cut down outside our house was sycamore, and my dad said apparently the pieces are in our garden? Shows how much I go out of the house! :smack: :laugh2:

This guitar is made from sycamore. It's not too heavy and sounds pretty good since I first got it in 1982.

It's probably not an ideal material but probably better than oak.
