OBL ...what they sound like ?

Hi Guys,

I recently had a view on OBL Pickups and I rather like the design but I have no idea what they sound like...

Anyway as I play humbuckers just and as I am quite into hard metal, I think the 500R and 500XL might be the right choice for me. Anyway I'm curious about them.

Can anyone describe them or compare them to more known gear?

Thanks for your advice

Don

Re: OBL ...what they sound like ?

I played an Epi Hawk a while ago that was equipped with a mini, a strat sized, and an angled 'bucker at the bridge. All three were OBL pickups. They sounded good and were pretty hot. Not remarkably good sounding pickups to my ears, but pretty good stock pickups as I recall.

I used to have a Hamer Chapparal with OBL pickups. I really didnt like them much...they were hot but ultimately rather bland. The neck was far better than the bridge.

I dont know what the model numbers were.

I support the neck was great! Didnt like the 500L and the 500XL at the bridge - bland when clean is the right word. But they react great under extreme distortion!

What OBL's were you looking at? Some OBL's are the same as the 500's! They were made by the same guy unless, they were the Gibson OBL's. Then they were designed by the same guy but, Gibson wrecked them!

BTW, my XL500 and L-500C I cant compare to anything on the market! They are their own animal!

I have a single coil OBL. Yeah - hot. Blade, 2 ceramic mags, fairly hot wind. I'll agree - nothing great tonewise. But I got it as a middle pup so I could set it pretty low (out of the way) and still use it in combo with split neck or bridge. It works well that way.
