Obsidian wire.

Re: Obsidian wire.

It looks well made to me, not really sure how it is ''crappy''. I don't enjoy soldering that much but i do love making guitars.

Re: Obsidian wire.

Do the pickups need connectors, or is it just push-in???

Those are great if you want generic setups. I have found that sort of thing to work in maybe 5% of cases. I'm always tweaking pot values/taper and cap values as each pickup set and guitar is its own thing

Re: Obsidian wire.

I just assumed they would be screw terminals but looking at them they seem to be push in. I use to care about all the pot values and **** now i just rock out with whatever is on hand. I wont be buying one they cost a bit much but i can see why they might be popular. :D

Obsidian wire.

I think we need to keep in mind that many of us here ENJOY tinkering around with our guitars and their innards. The rest of the world of guitarists, however, have no clue how their instruments work. The other guitarist in my band is like that… He would just as soon buy a new guitar rather than change out pickups or other electronics. I could definitely see someone like him going ahead and spending the money for a drop-in, professional replacement if he needed them. Sure, it's a little pricey, but not really out of line when you consider the professional job.

I think for your type of plug-n-play type thing they would work great.....plus its a great option for the Aus/nz area. They do look very pro and have been well designed for the typical setup and usual way most muso's would have their rig.

Re: Obsidian wire.

Considering most guitars get bounced around in a car & on stage, I just feel much more comfortable with a solid soldered connection than a push-in connector.

Re: Obsidian wire.

i think that for the prearmed pcb thing to work on here they should allow to easily swap pots, caps and install pickups and extra things with just a screwdriver

Re: Obsidian wire.

I would like to add that in industries where parts are moving all the time, almost no soldering is used. Push in or screw connections are just as good as a solder joint if not better in some cases. Not to mention that soldering pots is not everyone's forte. Very easy for an inexperienced guitarist to fry them. It is a common misconception that solder joins are ' inherently better'.
Those prefab boards look very good.

Radio Shack has these. They're called "breadboards."

Re: Obsidian wire.

I am all for this, even though I solder a lot. Hey, most electronics in cars feature plug-in connectors, and those transport our families.

I can see it really opening up the 'mod game' as there are so many people who won't change pickups because they are afraid. They have to be affordable and good quality. But I love the idea of something (eventually) like a 5 sway switch with small DIP switches which allow you to configure every position- I think Acme Guitar Works has this, and the Ernie Ball Super Sport has a software solution to this.

lol, for 3 years i worked with breadboards every day and that's about the worst option for something that will go inside a guitar

what i have on mind is a pcb with cut outs for the pots and plagued with screw terminals for pots, caps resistors and pickups with switches that can easily modify the wiring to have modern wiring, 50's wiring, treble bleed, and some other "common" guitar mods

for example a strat pcb will allow to have a standar start wiring or a masrter vol + master ptb, treeble bleeds, different switch-able cap values for tone and bass control

For a little while fender had strats with cards you could put in the back to rewire the guitar.
