Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Foxrox has NOTHING to do with Analogman except for that Analogman sells Foxrox pedals....

yeah i know, i didnt mean to mislead. just figured it would be easier to find the pedal if i said analogman. he has a really detailed description of the pedal on his website and some in depth stuff about different settings and the internal trim pots

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

I've got a FoxRox Octron 2, and it's a fantastic octaver in both directions. There are internal trimpots for both the upper and lower octaves to tailor the sound of them, including a trim pot to minimize the "fuzziness" of the upper octave, but it is still the traditional germanium transistor method of achieving the analog octave up. The lower octave is along the lines of the OC-2 sound, except that it tracks brilliantly and has the internal trim to focus the sound as a sub-bass or more of a midrange focus. The advantage of the Octron 2 is that it has independent footswitches and volume controls for each octave as well as for the direct signal, and a master bypass switch. It also has its own loop, to add a fuzz or envelope filter or anything else you might like to try. I'm not sure if Dave has made any more of them, he originally only made 100 and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. The original Octron is definitely still available and is sonically identical. Here's a clip I have posted before of the FoxRox Octron 2 going straight into the lead channel of a Fender Super Champ. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=707451&content=songinfo&songID=5499652 You can hear the upper octave and direct signal in the solo section. The rest of the track has all three octaves together.

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

As a little update (not that anyones is losing sleep over it) I borrowed a buddy's Whammy (reissue) today to experiment with that a bit.

Reminded me of why I sold it lol. To be fair it does do some kind of cool sounds and the detune is pretty sweet. Though its still just a digital "weeeeeeeeee" "weeeeee" "weeeee" to my ears and I'm not a fan of digital sounding squealing noises.

Tried it at various parts in the chain and at different settings and its definatly not an option. Again I'm not saying its a bad pedal but it doesnt remotely do what I want unless its only about 1/4th of the way down on the 1 up setting, everything else is pretty ugly to my ears.

For a screaming musical effect the Dunlop just killed it, though granted they are a bit different effects wise and I've got a huge bias for analog effects.

I think even bad analog effects interact with each otehr in a far more musical way than the best digital stuff.

I think that was the least likely choice though so I'm probably going to order a FoxRox as that sounds the best bet and hopefully one of my local shops gets a POG in to check out.

I know, I know, I just said I how I prefer analog but I still want to give the POG a chance just because it seems to offer some pretty cool and unique features.

To be continued.....

For Octavia...it is kinda hard going around the Chicago Iron, it has that old edgy thump and simply screams like a loose analouge demon:D
My buddy in gearcrimes has one....both he and me have been through them all about now, the Iron is where it gets really fun!
And Foxrox is da sh!t!!!

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Totally agree with you, everything I've heard from CI sounds as good as it gets

Although the Octron would be about $100 less, AND it would do the octave down effect as well so I'm really pulled in two directions

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Following up my last incomplelte post, I do belive MusicToyz sells both the Octron and the Chicago Iron. I could presumably order them both and let them know I'll keep the one I like best as they do have a return policy.

As a former music store employee way back in the day I do hate to see people buy things when they have no intention of keeping them (happens way too much) but I guess if I'm sure I'll like one or the other and keep them both in mint shape until I decied thats not really abusing the system

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Hmm...try tweaking your Dunlop before you do anything else...Octavia type pedals make the octave up sound using germanium transistors...this makes the octave up sound but it also makes a fuzzy tone...you can't make it do onw w/o the other, (Now keep in mind...something like a Whammy pedal or a POG don't do the fuzzy octave thing because they are digital). You can run a good octave up box WITH another fuzz to ge the sound you're looking for.

Also, try putting the octave after the fuzz and see if that helps you get a better octave sound. FWIW, I recently heard some clips that were made wit the new Dunlop Octavio and I was VERY impressed...

On the octave mode switch on the Octron it makes a VERY SMALL difference but one of the modes gives a slightly more ring mod tone but it's still not crazy like a ring mod and do be hoenst the difference is very slight.

Also, keep in mind...most octave/fuzz pedals are set up so that you won;t be able to run the octave unless the fuzz section is already on...

What was that awesome red fuzz/octave pedal you mentioned a while ago in another thread? With the independent Fuzz and independent ocave? I want one of those.

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Thanksgiving Day update:

Was up late and searching around ebay and just happened to come across a Chicago Iron Octavia for $200 shipped "buy it now". It was even the "upgraded" one with the status LED. Would of been $289 + shipping otherwise so my 3am logic thought it sounded like a pretty good deal.

So it seems convienence (and saving money) ended up narrowing the field for me

Hope everyone has a great holiday

Re: Octaves and Octavia's Your Input Please

Will do. I'll try to write up a detailed comparison with the Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octavia and try to get some clips comparing them as well.
