Od/distortion advice

knob?

I've always been an amp>guitar kinda guy but it seems the need for pedals has come. Wha I'm looking for is a pedal that will take a mildly dirty amp to 80s metal to grungy-doomey
Let the advice flow!

Re: Od/distortion advice

I've been absolutely GASing for a Kollmanation. It's a little pricey but was designed to work with just about any amp you put it in front of.

Re: Od/distortion advice

I liked the MI Audio Crunchbox in front of a slightly dirty amp. It had enough gain to do most any 80's metal stuff. I also liked the Fulltone OCD pedals that I have played with too.

Re: Od/distortion advice

I think the Rat 2 does a great job with that. By stacking it with a dirty amp in different ways, I keep wringing tones out of it that feel wholly authentic instead of a half-hearted "close".

Re: Od/distortion advice

I was also going to suggest Rat 2. Also, the Crunchbox seems a good choice, as mentioned.

The new Duncan Dirty Deed would work well for that. My Catalinbread Super Charged Overdrive. MXR HAS to have something.

And once upon a time, the DS-1 was used for this. Almost ANY standard Distortion that isn't Uber or too mild.

What Amp?

Re: Od/distortion advice

update: so after a trip to GC this morning i settled on an OCD to start. ive only fiddled with it for a few hours but so far im realy diggin it for my application. now im woundering how it will sound with an ep boost ect. looks like im getting the first stages of pedal addiction, crap!

Re: Od/distortion advice

At home I've been using an MXR Distortion III for this. When I actually cranked my Princeton up to 7 or so and started getting significant tube breakup and then hit the MXR, it sounded great. Maybe a little more on the "doom" side than metal though. I like the MXR Dist. III cause it is midrangey, has a fair amount of level boost available, and keeps a strong low end. And it's cheap!

The OCD is a great pedal. But now that you're getting into it, you have to buy all the pedals. Every. Single. One of them. There is no escape!

This is absolutely true

The EP Boost is all kinds of awesome but it won't do the same things as the OCD... Aka no distortion just a sweet boost
