Od pedal for jcm 800

I am looking for a pedal to put in front of my jcm800 2210 (the one with diode clipping).
I´m thinking about a boss od3, seems like a great pedal.
But it´s just (dumb question perhaps) would it be enough?
My main axe is a charvel with a jb bridge, cool rail neck.
I have to be able of getting enough distortion even when i´m not cranking it (small gig level, and so on).
The music i play is kinda like a mix between maiden and accept, or not really but you get the idea...
No doubt it would work if i could crank the amp all the time, but in this case, would a ds1 be better?
I suppose the od3 would work fine, i just wanna be sure.
I´m not looking for super high gain tones but more of an 80´s metal tone.

So give me your opinions please

I have the combo version (4210, 1X12, 50 watts) and I use a SD-1 in front. Works really really good for me. Note that I'm not trying to get a liquidy distortion from that amp but it does push it great... I got mine modded by Stratdeluxer97 here on the forum and it is now a killer pedal! I'd highly recommend one, I'd post you some clips but I really don't have what it takes to record...sorry

I tried several pedals with my JCM800 and ended up with the Hughes/Kettner Tube Factor. It sounds fantastic when you get some volume behind it. It has 2 distortion settings, one with a diode clipping option. It has a res-freq knob and true bypass.

I have also seen this unit praised on a major Marshall forum.
Last time I looked, I saw one on ebay for about $95.

Sounds interesting, but i have a credit note at a local store, so i would rather just get a normal boss or similar.

I personally prefer the SD-1. Thats what I use for a lead boost.

Hey, sorry for the delay...

The SD-1 just gives me some more gain... sorry, I can't really elaborate more... it just gives me the extra gain I need to smoothen the solos and such... great tone as far as I'm concerned....

For more grith I also use a DS-1, also modded by Stratdeluxer.... (can you tell I'm a supporter?) Great stuff too....

I can't really tell you what he did to them but I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help if you shoot him a PM....

Fulltone OCD... its a little extra cash but TOTALLY worth it. The fact that it sounds like a cookin' marshall all by itself helps, too.

I have a JCM 800 2210 as well. I use an unmodded Tube Screamer right now (getting it modded soon) to push the clean channel every once in awhile. I can get all the distortion I need out of the second channel.

Are you looking for a pedal to push the clean channel or the drive channel?

...while most of the earlier 2210's (pre '85) were not known for having the most "stellar" OD, the later versions were/are the "definition" of Marshall OD...imho!

I can only assume your's is the early design....if you want to know for sure pull V2, the second 12ax7 closest to the input jack...(while the amp's off, of course) and then turn it back on..... one of the two channels will no longer work.... if the boost channel quits working, the you have the early design..
If the normal channel quits then yours is the later version...

Not particularly well known in the "amp world" is the two designs are "radically different" and they don't sound anything alike!

OD pedals aren't required for the later versions...(assuming it works right!)
the earlier versions seem to take most of the ones mentioned here quite well...

I use a Fulltone Full-Drive 2 in front of my JCM800 (50W head), and a Fulltone Fat Boost through the FX loop for a solo boost. Sounds great that way!

..well I do happen to sort of like these.... all used three gain stages but were laid out entirely different....

Thats kind of why I was confused, I have an '88 and I absolutely love the drive channel on my 2210. I haven't played a pre '85 version so I can't really compare them.

..if you get a chance, try pulling V2 and see what happens... it makes it easier to point you in the right direction...

Just checked the serial number on my 2210 and it's a 'W'. Which I believe is late 80's?

FYI, I've got a Marshall jcm800 2205 and supposedly they are the same way. Amps made after 96 I believe are the "better" version. There also supposedly was a lot of channel bleed through in the earlier models.

I've got a 87 model and really like it. These amps would benefit greately however with a midrange control on the clean channel.
