i hate marshall distortion, sorry

i listened to sound clips of the big muff on musiciansfriend...sounds too robotic

If you want to fatten up your distortion, then you're going to be approaching a marshall. The jackhammer does colour your sound, but it's not the only thing determining your sound, especially at lower gain which I prefer.

The big muff can sound too modern, but if you use the right amp and pickups.....

Drew, I have come to a conclusion that you really don't know what your talking about. Get a clue and make up your mind. Go to GC and get a salesman to help you, they seem to be on the same level as you.

He has a point though. My experience with marshall amps is limmited, but they sound boring and come off as one trick ponies after you decide where to set your mids at. But I just don't like overdrive with fender amps.

That's why I love my traynor.


That said, the marshall jackhammer does NOT sound like a marshall head. It brings your sound closer, but it's very natural sounding. Unlike the bigmuff, brittle highs aren't as exposed, and it does have a tonne of lower end available to you unlike pedals like the boss turbo overdrive or whatever it's called. Hate that pedal.

No, the rat sounds waaaaay different from the jackhammer. It's much closer to the big muff, only not as smooth or as full or as thick.

The marshall jackhammer (on the overdrive setting as opposed to distortion) sounds like my mxr distortion +, but the jackhammer:

Has bottom end where the mxr lacks both bass and lower mids
the jackhammer is less buzzy and is cleaner
the jackhammer has more output and gain if you dial it in
the jackhammer has onboard eq (which I never use)


It has a bit of the marshall colour to it, but I think it's overpowered by the kind of amp and guitar you use.

I'll make some... I haven't heard those clips, I'm trying to find them.


Found them, but they won't load for me. Overdrive at 7 and 10.... I set mine at 10..... 10 o'clock. I don't know what these guys were smoking at the time they made these tracks, I don't want to think about what the tracks sound like. Eek. They've scooped their mids.

I'm up tonight because I work tommorow night so I have to sleep during the day today. It's cold out so I've given the paint stripper on a guitar I'm working on extra time, I have an hour and a half to burn. I'll make some clips for you, but I don't know where to host them besides my geocities site. I'll PM you with a link to the webpage after I'm done.

ok i listened to the clips, and i don't think its quite what I'm looking for. See, I'm looking for a fat heavy kinda sound to blend with my fender in amp (more drive on, drive knob set to 12) to give it more bottom end, make it a little fatter sounding, and give it more sustain. This one is crunchy enough on its own to where i COULD use it by itself, but not quite the sound i'm going for. So its down to the big muff or the rat2, big muff is definately more bland sounding, but a local shop has it, so if it does the job its what i'll get, and if not, i REALLY hope the rat works. By the way, do you think i'll have an amazing ammount of feedback from mixing in-amp with pedal distortion?

Questions and then some
Feedback is dependant on how your pickup is mounted, how microphonic it is.
A few guitars have a hard time feeding, some just needs to look at a few milligrams of gain and the squeal like a damn pig!
Why not just get a pedal that delivers enough to spare and let the gainchannel be?
They sound kinda nasty on those Fenders anyways.
T-Rex Dr. Swamp, Emma ReezaFRATzitz, old Big Muffs, the old yellow DOD Supraoverdrive has plenty of gain and grit to spare!

ok, bringing up an old post

lets see, i tried a lot of boss's & danelectros but they didn't work out too well, unfortunately the only local shop that has big muffs sold it like 2 weeks ago

someone did reccomend me the zakk wylde pedal though, they said in interviews he wanted to fatten up his sound & give it more bottom end, which is what i wanna do, but neither of us have tried them

any thoughts?

A TS-9 might work, but they are really mid-focused. Maybe a Boss OS-1 would be the direction your looking for? If not, a Big Muff has a big bottom to it.

they have too much fuzz, the fender in-amp is like 100% fuzz, i don't need any more, haha
