OD Pedals? (TS & others)

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

Update: I purchased the TS9 and brought it home today to try out on my rig.

Results:
- It worked on the 2nd channel (skipping the 1st preamp tube)
- Sound wasn't all that good though ... nice distortion but tone was not good
- Then I tried on the 1st preamp channel ... worked better BUT
- It really doesn't help the Boogie ... tone is nowhere close to the quality
- I think I'll just stick with the tried and true Boogie pre-amp

Taking back the pedal tomorrow. Worth a try though :)

Yeah, my dad had a similar experience with his. He came home with a pedal and we plugged it in. Well it sounded alright, but why settle with pretty decent drive when you can easily twitch a knob or two and get killer over drive?

Congrats, you've got a boogie. I'm going to be scarred for life, any amp I get will be compared to the mark 2 c boogie because that's what I grew up with.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

I had Marshalls and Fenders when I got the Boogie back in '78. I liked them but the Boogie just works for me. It actually took some getting used to in the beginning. But ... as you said ... it's just hard for me to use anything else. It's like an old pair of sneakers.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

since you're going back to the store to return the pedal anyways, ask to try out an MXR Distortion+. I can't vouch for the new ones, but i have a 1979 version and the thing gives the best damn overdrive i've ever heard. You might as well give it a go.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

Do pickup the Arion Tubulator from MF when its $10 again..nothing to lose there:)..most TS based ODs will cut bass and highs and focus on the mids, making them great solo boosts. As a standalone distortion device or for rhythm work, these ODs wont really cut it IMO.

Why dont you try some boost pedals, which wont manipulate your amp's tone, but just enhance it? As for the Boss BD2, you can try the Keeley modded version with phat switch.IIRC it can do clean boost as well.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

So what is the TS9 mod? Can I find details on the intranet?

stratdeluxer97 on this discussion board does a great mod on a ts9 -- i love mine -- i don't know if he's still doing them though...

Now that I have a point of reference with the TS9, I can probably try out a couple of the options suggested on GC's pedal rack.

I was really hoping for a killer sound running through the 2nd input (skipping the 1st pre-amp tube). It was good but not killer compared to the 1st input involving all pre-amp tubes. What I got was sustain ... but the bright tones was kind of "white washed" or maybe "grey washed". Just one man's opinion ... what it was doing for me. :13:

But again, I think I could tell what other pedals might do with my Boogie, after getting this point of reference.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

Your best bet is to drag your amp to the shop and spend an afternoon trying out different pedals.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

You sound like you want an overdrive pedal. My top 2 recommendations:
DOD-250
Boss SD-1

very good choices. I would recommend one better which is to get a Keely modded SD-1 or an Analogman "Grey Mod" or Mojo Modded DOD250. I have both and will not part with either. Awesome pedals for sure.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

I think you are understanding what I'm thinking about ... the early Mesa's were basically 12ax7>12ax7>12at7>6L6 souped up Fender Princetons. I've always been really satisfied with the tone I get going through input #1 (all of the preamp cascades) but have never used the #2 input (skipping the 1st preamp station). I don't use this "clean" option because of the volume drop plus I can get clean by just backing off the guitar volume. See the original Mesa's could be footswitched between #1 and #2 input.

So recently I've been thinking ...

Input 1: What I've been doing for 28 years ... and love it.

Input 2: TS9 in the loop ... beefing up the clean channel.

I haven't thought through the switching needs yet ... I think it's just an A/B switcher. But that setup might give me some more options that are "in the same neighborhood but different" tones.

So what is the TS9 mod? Can I find details on the intranet?

Contact StratDeluxer97. He's a member here and he usually only does mods for guys on the forum. I would suggest getting the TS9 first and play with it the way your are thimking and see if it works for you, but the TS9 that John modded for me smokes a stock RI TS9.

+1, John does great work. I've had both a DS-1 and SD-1 modded by John and they were killer. I'm not sure if he's still doing to mods though. I'm sure he'll chime in here.

I may hold on to it a few more days and keep experimenting. I can take it back after a few more days. I might make a few clips ... and post for opinions.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

the most common complaint about TSs is the "mid hump", which IMO makes it perfect for leads, especially playing blues.

Like others, I recommend the Maxon OD808 out of the box -- this pedal, like the original TS 808s is more transparent than a TS9

I think it's a good thing you've played a long time without pedals -- that makes you focus on your hands and guitar controls. It could just be that you'll prefer that in the end -- adding pedals makes your amp's response a little less "immediate". Still, a little OD is great for controlling your overdrive volume.

I went through this same exercise... The only overdrive/distortion pedal that I like is the TS. I still like the sound of the TS, but for me trick is to only use a "little" overdrive. When you dial in too much, it starts to sound artificial.

But for a more natural sound, I still go back to a tube-based pedal. It sounds like what you're looking for is the Chandler/Butler tube driver. (Or the Markley Overlord, or the Mesa V-Twin...) That's the natural overdrive sound you're looking for.

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

For natural overdrive...well Frantone Hep Cat or Brooklyn overdrive.
Those are very good drives...alittle expensive but very good!

. . . should "we" take advice from a 9year old seriously ? :fing25:

Does your momma know you are on the computer after bed-time ?

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

I have nay OD-pedals, as i LOVE overdrive, but NOT Distorto tones !

For my style of music (hot rodded electric blues - not really blues rock - think Black Keys), i prefer my BD-2 over any of the other units that io have !

Second in line, is an early 80's Rat (w. LM308 chip)

I also have an MXR ZW44 (hot rod SD-1)
SD-1
TS9
EHX LPB1 - i love it, but not to sure it is what you are looking for. Still, you can get one from MF for $40.00 - bloody great bargain for a slightly gritty boost !
MXR Micro Amp

But i still prefer my BD-2 set to, 1 o'clock, with my Blues Jr !!!

Re: OD Pedals? (TS & others)

It is not on their site yet - i just looked now - but i saw pic's on HC that was taken at NAMM of the, 'new-look' of Visual Sounds series of units, and they have quite a few new ones for us !

One of them, is the OD-section of the J&H, but instead of having an OD & Dist. section, it is TWO OD's in one unit !
I also believe that their OD's are based on the TS type tone, so that would be worth a look, once they release them on to us !

Hope it is soon !
