In my experience the Blues Driver sounds a little to processed, and not as full/rich/organic (take your pick) as the tubescreamer. If your going to try a TS-9 or an 808 try them both side by side, there is a slight diffence in sound, I think the 808 sounds a little richer. Also if you're looking in spending a little more money try a Fulltone Fulldrive II or the Fulltone OCD, both add very little color to your sound, yet really make your amp come alive.

It is a TS style drive, plenty of colouring there!

ok man, here's my reccomendation while you still got the TS

turn all your knobs to noon, set the TS to where it's not giving ANY volume boost, tone straight up the middle, drive knob all the way down. turn your amp up to JUST before it starts clipping

then set the EQ on your amp & adjust the tone knob on the pedal to where it sounds like the drive tone you want, just...clean

then turn up the level on the TS, and set the drive knob wherever you want it. In my expirience they sound best when the amp OD is mixed with the pedal OD

Perluss Whun. I've been using one for a couple of months. I like it. My only complaint is that it sometimes makes a "pop" when I turn it on/change channels. But I REALLY dig the tone.

+1, John does great work. I've had both a DS-1 and SD-1 modded by John and they were killer. I'm not sure if he's still doing to mods though. I'm sure he'll chime in here.

John (Stratdeluxer) has often described his mods to those interested. I didn't understand what he said, but he freely gave his info. If you're comfortable doing mods, he'd help you get started.

I've wanted to try the Visual Sound Route 66 OD/comp pedal, but I can't justify getting one.

A friend has an old Boss Super Overdrive pedal that sounds SCHWEET!

I may drive over to GC and test out one of the TS9s. I think it might be more towards the style I play. Might get one if it sounds interesting and return it if it doesn't work with my amp.

Can't seem to even find the Boss Blues Driver ... it appears we've lost it and the Boss Metal Pedal since my son doesn't use them anymore either. The Blues Driver didn't do anything for me when I tried it. That's the reason I asked about it ... since they seemed to be designed to do similar things.

Definitely check out the TS-9, and I've always wanted to try the Route 66 pedal. I read a lot about it and listened to a bunch of soundbytes, it seems to be pretty cool. John S./aka/ STRATDELUXER97 does a great job of being able to dial in a tubescreamer's tone to be about as vintage as it gets, IMHO. You might consider finding a cheaper used one and asking him to go through it.

OK ... kept the TS9 for a couple of days ... to play with it.

My original idea ... TS9 through the 2nd channel (skipping first pre-amp tube). This proably won't work. Have to run the pedal up pretty high and it's pretty artifical sounding to me.

Based on a couple of suggestions, tried running LOW DRIVE (9-10 o'clock) + 12 o'clock TONE + LEVEL to balance to the "NO TS9" volume + running through Channel #1 with all preamp tubes. This sounds better ... gets worse the more drive you add. It seems to fit the single coils better. So a little drive mixed with the overdrive is better and does give a completely different sounding option.

I'll keep playing with it acouple more days ... see if it fits me. Thanks for the input.

Update:

I'm starting to warm up to the TS9 ... used on input #1 set up as described in last post. It's a different more mid-rangey sound ... but if I don't run too much drive, it gives me another place to go. I may keep it. I think it works better with the single coil guitars I have.

Also, I did go over to GC and look at Boss SD-1, BD-2 and OD-3 ... didn't bring any of those home with me.

I liked the TS9. But I really dig the SFX03.

My TS9 found a happy home with Chops, though.
