OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

I agree with Rid. Find a place that has a generous return policy and buy and return till you get the right one. Or, sit on Ebay, buy the best ones as cheap as possible, then sell them after a few weeks for exactly what you paid.

I like the Banzai and Fulltone stuff, but right now I'm still thinking about the Menatone Fish Factory I tried last week at the Amp Show. Unlike most other dual mode overdrives, you can turn on the left button, the right button, or both at once.
It's basically a Blue Collar OD and Red Snapper OD in the same box. Very Cool!

Thanks!!! I'm a guitargeek transplant, and I browse g.com enough to know your username ;-)

Never been to guitargeek, but I can assure you this is quite a different environment compared to g.com. I prefer this place by far, much less of the aimless griping, etc.

Back on topic, Jeff, something positive you should keep in mind is that there are SO MANY pedals in this vein today that there is bound to be something that does exactly what you want. It's astonishing really.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Jeff - Go out right now and order an OCD. It's bar none the best distortion pedal I've ever had and can actually be tamed enough to be used as a VERY nice boost or and overdrive. Plus its got a very Marshally vibe in it already so you'd probably love it.

It the only pedal I've ever owned that seems to add and augment tones, rather than altering tone. This thing freakin RULES. Totally worth the wait.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Please check out a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive and try the clean control. I won't try to explain it, you have to hear it.....Joe

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

I wanted a pedal for a similar use, but after I thought about it I decided to have it made to go inside the guitar on a push/push volume pot. It's a JFET based boost, which from what I've heard sound the best.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Getting straight 10's for sound quality on harmony-central.
When I was at the Amp Show, I stepped on all the Menatone OD's, and the new Fish Factory was the 'one.'

I have a friend who had the fish factory. Now he's raving about the xotic RC and AC Boosters:

I'll check those out. There's NO shortage of great OD's out there these days.
Anytime I hear about something, I check the harmony reviews, just to see what people are saying. It's almost mind boggling to see how many boutique effect pedals there are!!!

Years ago, I went through a bunch, just to find one that I loved. I stopped buying OD's after I got my gold Klon Centaur. I'm pretty much satisfied with that, although it's always fun to see the new ones coming out. I'm still pretty curious about the OCD, Fish Factory, and some of the Nick Greer pedals. I just can't believe some of the prices they want for these $35 contraptions!!!! :saeek:

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Thanks for all the reply's. I think I'm going to try a couple. Charlotte has almost NO guitar stores, MF is the best place with selection, and they have zip for good effects. I'll probably have to look at online places with 30 day return policies, or just go eBay with what I don't like. You guys have given me some good ideas.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

Ok, decision made for the most part. I'm going to buy all and then sell what doesn't work for me. Watch the trading post over the next month or so.

Round 1 purchases:

Carl Martin Plexitone
Banzi Fireball
Fulltone OCD

Round 2

Fulltone Fulldrive II
Carl Martin Hot Drive n Boost

From there, if I don't find a pedal that combines OD AND BOOST (with the exception of the OCD), I'll try seperate OD pedals and boosts. Probably the Fulltone Fat Boost combined with something like the OCD, the Menatone King Of The Britans, or something similar.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

If you're interested in the JFET pedal or onboard booster I'm getting, I can PM you the email address of the guy that makes them.

Re: OD Units - I'm Really Confused

If I were you Jeff, I'd get Banzai Coldfusion and Fulltone Fat Boost.
