OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

Playing thru a 5150. Wanting to boost and shape my tone. I've narrowed it down to 3 pedals from my research.

Maxon OD808
Ibanez TS7 or TS7
OR a BOSS SD-1

I play hard rock/metal that's a tad sludge

Which one works best for you and why?
I've seen a lot of demos with the OD808 that I was impressed with but thought I would ask here as well

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

I'd go for standard Maxon. It should fit perfectly with 5150. SD-1 is variation about tube screamers, but for me it has been an effect which does not go for high gain amps. I'd not recommend TS7, they are cheaper than standard screamers, but they are tone sucking and cuts some mids imo.

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

The differences between those 4 pedals is pretty small... all are tubescreamers. Infront of a 5150 with high gain the differences will be minimal. The slight differences between each get harder to hear the more gain you use.

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

Knowing the 5150, and those pedals, I say get the omen that is cheapest. TS-7 IS a TS-9….all you really need is the tone control IMO anyway….

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

Maxon and Ibanez are closely related since Maxon used to make Ibanezes Tube Screamers... Boss OD-1 is a different animal than a Tube Screamer.

That being said, I love the tone of my Ibanez TSA amp... With its built in Tube Screamer, its really got something special...

Here's another option... the late Gary Moore and Phil X both loved using the rather cheap Digitech Bad Monkey. It was voted the Number 1 overdrive pedal under $100. You can find them used for about $25. Can't go wrong there.

Also, the Joyo line is incredible too. Their take on many of the boutique and vintage pedals are outstanding. Don't let the price tag fool you into a cheap pedal. Cheap in cost, not in quality or tone.

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

Subtle difference between those pedals.

I have a TS808 and an MXR Classic Overdrive (kinda like in between an SD-1 and a TS808 but with a bit of its own thing going on), and I used to own a Maxon OD-9. Depends on what your tastes are and what you're going for. I prefer the Maxon/Ibanez family of overdrives for boosting high-gain amps for their familar sound. I personally preferred the TS808 because it's a wee-bit smoother than the OD-9, but the difference is VERY subtle once you drop tons of gain from the amp on top.

The OD-808 ought to be a tad more transparent and open-sounding than the TS808 (meaning it cuts a tiny bit less highs and lows), and the TS7 and TS9 are pretty much interchangeable. They are the same circuit, but the TS9 is made a bit better, so I ought to hold up to abuse a tiny bit better, theoretically speaking. The TS9 is a touch more aggressive in the high mids, and it is a wee-bit more compressed or gainy than the TS808, IME. Subtly. They all both do the Tube Screamer squishy creamy mids, smooth top, and tight lows thing.

The Boss SD-1 is close in the sense that it chops off and tightens the low-end and adds a hint of compression. The SD-1 has less creamy mids, and it sounds a bit more aggressive in the high-mids and highs, and its character is more grainy. I wouldn't say it's interchangeable with a Tube Screamer, but it's definitely within the same family. It can be moded to sound more TS-like easily too.

The Maxon OD-808 is the safest bet from those, I think.

The Electro Harmonix Easty River Drive also does the Tube Screamer thing too for cheap. A buddy has one and we've AB'd it with my Ibanez, MXR, and former Maxon. It's closer to the Ibanez than the MXR is for sure. It's a bit more open-sounding with a touch less gain. It's got less output level too, though.

its all about the EQ those things are making instead of their gain, for the high gain amps. i would say the Maxon and the Ibanez modifies the Mids more than the Boss.

Ok so.after spending hours on youtube I definitely decided to go with the OD808. But then, I found a guy who mods an SD-1 KEELEY/ALLUM/FROMMEL all in one.. I don't know much about the mods, watches some vids on the Keeley mod and thought it sounded pretty good ... a more less-compressed sound. Would you guys have any thoughts on these mods?

I like to use some version of all three.

Actually, I'd say the tube screamer thing is the creamy, squishy core mids, but the SD-1's thing is the high-mid, lower-highs grit and grind... so they both are mid-shaping pedals, just different kinds of mids. IMO

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

I think that the SD-1 is a lot more airy, the TS type pedals have a lot more snort and honk.

Mehh on mods. They're great if you're boosting your Fender or whatever for a bluesy sound, but most of the time, the mods kinda defeat the purpose of using a particular pedal to boost a high-gain amp. In my mind, if I'm even considering a pedal to boost my high-gain amp, it's because I want that pedal's color (tight bass, squishy mids, focused tone), not some watered-down "more natural" version of it.

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

Yeah I did more research on all the mods and they're cool but not really the application I'm looking to use it for.

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

MXR Badass OD, I have had it on my board for 3 years now. It will dial into any amp well..
I love that OD! I use it on my Blue channel of my 5150iii as a solo boost with my gain on the amp low..

Re: OD808 TS7/9 OR SD-1?

If you sat down and compared all of these, you would walk away with a clear preference.

If you just bought one of them on a whim, you'd be happy with whatever decision you made.
