ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

I was saying on another thread that i felt that the DD was not quite clear or tight enough.
I really like the aggression and overall vibe of this pup so i refused to give up on it. plus i did not want to let travis down! in case you were not aware of it he IS the unofficial endorser for this pup! LOL!!!!!
I had heard that the hex poles give a tighter, crisper attack with a bit more presence, so i went about making one row of poles with the hex ones(stud side coil)
i used the poles that come with dimarzio's super distortion, these fit into the hole the the stud poles originally went perfect!
result? well lets just say it did what i wanted, the DD is now tighter and clearer than previously BUT it did not LOSE ANY aggression or power.
i find it odd that i simple littel mod like this could work :smack: :laugh2:
now im a happy camper! :)

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

hey BTW i would appreciate it if you guys would throw out some names to me for this
modded DD? I like the one guys JB from hell name! :laugh2:

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Full Distortion? maybe?

Just because the Full Shred is the only SD I know of with the hex poles.

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Duncan Sabotage ... might as well name it after you, you invented it!

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

By the way, is there anywhere I could get some hex poles without having to take them out of a DiMarzio?

yeah just call dimarzio at
1-800-221-6468
tell them you want to replace worn poles from whatever dimarzio?
see the super D ,EVO,dual sound, super 3, super II all have full barrell hex poles
these are as thick as the stud poles like i took out of my DD all along their length
the other dimarzio's that have hex poles have a fat rounded head and a threaded skinnier bottom part like a screw from a duncan pup only the head is a hex and not a flat head

Just wait, some of the more creative guys will get in here eventually. If Seafoamer or Blue Calx sees this thread, I'm sure they'll come up with something.

Duncan Sabotage
best pup name EVAR!

or demon distorion since the demon is built the same way, one side screws, one side hex poles)
but duncan sabotage sounds awesome!

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Sabotage I'd use your name since you did it. I have tried the same thing you did only I also swapped the slotted screws for the other type of hex head screws to replace the slotted screws. Talk about tight distortion!

Did you also find that the hex head screws you used for the slug coil were a little loose and the magnetic pull pulls them down below the bobbin unless you use a spacer of some sort as I used 1/2" length 10/32" hex head set screws (like the Dimarzio Super Distortion poles)

I was going to throw out the same name. I scrolled down the page and BAM!!!! You beat me to it!!!! Great minds think alike!!!
+1 for the Demon Distortion!!!!

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Hey man, glad you finally got a version of the Distortion to make you happy. Perhaps I'll try out the Sabotage mod to one of my Distortions some day.

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Is there a way to order either a Distortion or a JB with all polepieces and no slugs?? Or is there a way to get the slugs out to take hex screws on both coils....not just the one.

I'd like to try a full hex pole piece on a JB or something.

I just replaced the JB from Hell's slugs with regular slot-head screw poles, and I'm very disappointed. It may have added a little more high end, but did nothing nearly worth the trouble of removing & dismantling a pup. Perhaps with an A5 magnet, the tonal difference would be more noticeable.

How did you get the slugs out?? Does it trash the pickup??

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Hmmm, this thread is getting me a little confused. I remember reading about REMOVING the hex poles from the Screaming Demon and replacing them with flathead screws for "better tone", and now I'm reading the opposite (although about another pickup) :smack:

OK, forget that idea, altough SD should call it that if they were to make it, but I think the Sabotage rocks.

It's a different pickup, with a different wind, wire, magnet, etc., every little bit makes a difference (maybe only small, but it's a difference), so with different pickups all theses changes will have different effects.

So what works for one, will not necessarily have the same effect on another pickup.

"Better Tone" is all down to you, and your perception of "Better Tone", everyone has their own tone.

Looks like Sabotage got his tone from this mod, might not work for you or anyone else, but you gotta try these things to find out though.

actually the poles i used from a dimarzio SD were a perfect fit. they were long enough to go all the way to the bottom of the baseplate and make full contact with the magnet as well.
in case you have never taken a look inside a DD the coils are raised above the plate to compensate for the larger(height) ceramic magnet.
duncan used two plastic spacers for shims to raise the coils to the proper height.
these dimarzio hex poles are the barrel type and go in the the exsiting hole the stud used to be in and it fits perfect!
the pup is a keeper tis way for me since it accomplished what i wanted which is a tighter, clearer, more focused DD. i
i am very happy to only have had to do this minor(easy as can be!) mod to get the results i did

it is great only IF you want the DD to be tighter, and more focused overall.
it gets a bit more presence this was as well, cuts through like a butcher knife with the band! :)
