ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Is there a way to order either a Distortion or a JB with all polepieces and no slugs?? Or is there a way to get the slugs out to take hex screws on both coils....not just the one.

I'd like to try a full hex pole piece on a JB or something.

ranalli i did not like the DD with both coils hex pole, it got to thin sounding.
with only one coil hex pole,it adds just enough tighteness and presence for my taste.
as far as ordering a DD with these poles i am sure the Custom shop would do it.
or you can call dimarzio and ask for the poles for a super D and do it yourself
it is real easy man
:)

I just replaced the JB from Hell's slugs with regular slot-head screw poles, and I'm very disappointed. It may have added a little more high end, but did nothing nearly worth the trouble of removing & dismantling a pup. Perhaps with an A5 magnet, the tonal difference would be more noticeable.

if you use two rows of screw poles and put in a alnico II it will become the AH-1 or allan holdsworth model duncan used to make a few years ago. :)
a stock JB with two rows of screws may be a bit to trebly but with the alnico II it is sweet!

How did you get the slugs out?? Does it trash the pickup??
from under the pup, the baseplate has two rows of holes for the screws/studs
all i did was take a skinny phillips screw driver and push the stud poles through and out of the top of the coil.
no damge to my pup whatsoever
:)
then obviously i put in the hex poles in those holes and voila, duncan SABOTAGE! :laugh2:

Hmmm, this thread is getting me a little confused. I remember reading about REMOVING the hex poles from the Screaming Demon and replacing them with flathead screws for "better tone", and now I'm reading the opposite (although about another pickup) :smack:

the demon pup is a different beast altogether. let me see if i can explain, duncan designed the demon to intentionally have a tight, clear, focused tone from the get go.
so they used the hex poles on that one coil to achieve that.
the hex poles will give a pup(or one coil in the demons case) a sharper, more foucused, tighter attack
so if anything putting in screws in the hex coil of a demon will make it warmer overall. :)

So is that the decided name? Duncan Sabotage?

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Sabotage, by the way, what type of guitar are you using it in? I have my distortion in an Ibanez RG and it sounds GREAT when I am in standard tuning. HOWEVER, when I drop tune it to C (which is what I use that guitar for typically), it loses some of the expressiveness I liked from it in E. I can't really explain what it is it loses, I'll go play it now and post in a half an hour.

What tuning do you use the Sabotage in? maybe doing that mod will improve the Distortion when it is drop tuned to C? Give it a shot man!

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

Well, I use my Distortions in E or Eb and they sound absolutely great. Honestly, I've never tried any lower than that.

I use this ONE modded(my only for now) DD in a USA jackson DK-1(alder,ebony board, semi blocked floyd rose trem that dives only)
I tune to Eb sometimes D depending on the tune. i use a EVH d-tuna for the drop D stuff on the jackson.
since this mod does bring up the presence of the pup some it may be perfect for low tunings? i would give it a go :cool3:

yeah randy(the late great axe man for ozzy) used his in concert pitch and Eb as well
:)
I use Eb the most for the tension feel it has on the strings and it has a bit more roar and GROWL than concert A=440hz :laugh2:

Alright I just finished messing around.

I know tuning to CGDCFAD will cause the strings to be more floppy and for the sound to lose its focus, but the distortion is less TIGHT in my opinion when tuned to Drop C. Maybe your mod will do the trick?

Savage Distortion is cool too!

yeah i really believe from what you are tellin me that it will do what you want :cool3:
i had the same complaint, loved the tone but it was not tight or focused enough.
problem solved now.
best part is it is 100% reversible if you dont like it and with very little effort and no damage to the pu itself :)

Sabotage: I'm going to do this mod! I'll order the hex poles after christmas! I'll keep in touch with you through PM's to let you and everyone know how it turns out!

I'm also buying Dani's EMG afterburner to load into the same axe as the distortion is in... once I send him the cash and I install it, I'll let you know how the afterburner sounds with the Duncan Sabotage/Savage Distortion or whatever you decide to call it!

Re: ODD experiment goes good! (duncan distortion related)

I'm also going to be putting an Alnico 4 Magnet I got from Lew a while back into my JB. Maybe it'll tame the brightness and improve the sound from it.

Yeah, but the 4 is what I got lying around here, so I'll give this a shot, and if it doesnt make too much of a difference, I'll try the 4 in my Distortion. That will be weird!
