Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

Introducing the Toxic 20. My friend & I built these over the last 14 months. Everything with the exception of the electronic components, and hardware, was fabricated in our shop. The wood is quarter-sawn, Curly American Sycamore...when it arrived, it was rough-sawn, with bark on 2 sides. We did all the finishing beyond that. The chassis was made from .062" aluminum flat stock. It's a class-A, 20watt, tube-powered amplifier. The sound is absolutely glorious! I'll try and answer specifics, as they are recieved. Hope you guys like it...

Re: Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

It's the best sounding amp I've played. It has all the charm of class A operation, it's very touch-sensitive, it likes Strats, LP's...just about anything you put in it. I'm not exaggerating when I say it sounds awesome. I wish you guys could play thru it!

I love the look of finished cabs, and jones everytime I see one like this or like the Celtic Edana Scott made for Gr8Scott. That's one amp where I'd spring for a roadcase or Tuki padded cover.

I love how you did the back panel. It looks like the best of both worlds between closed and open back.

Thanks GJ. The back panel is actually variable. There's a lever which will allow you to adjust the amount of porting thru the opening. Notice how the speaker portion is isolated from the rest of the cabinet. We thought it was a good idea... Oh yeah, it's got a custom padded cover.

Re: Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

Oh that looks great. I like the name and the adjustable speaker porting is a great idea, looks good too.

Re: Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

That is some very nice work..... Love the way the back is layed out with some ports for the speaker

Re: Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

Sweet looking amp! I love the porting on the back, looks amazing.

What is its tonal range though? Class A amps are typically more clean/high-gain-blues/classic metal tones aren't they... or am I way off?

Re: Of Blood, Sweat, & Splinters...

I like the open/closed back combination, Casblah.

The fan was a fantastic idea also. Your time was well spent.

Nice job. :)

This is a 2-channel amp. It's powered by a single KT-88. Though it will accept EL34's, KT66, 6550's, and KT90 -type output tubes. There are two 12AX7's for the preamp stage. Tonally, the clean channel will do anything from a shimmering "clean", to a great, throaty overdrive when pushed. The gain channel is punchy and clear; but it wouldn't be considered high-gain by today's standards. It won't do the Recto/XXX/XTC -type gain. It's more old-school, than new-school, but we built it with that in mind. But it has a sound that makes you want to sit down, and play the thing...so there's something to be said about that. Thanks for the positive comments, I'm glad you guys are diggin it!

SOunds interesting, very interesting.... is there a 220v version or plans for one?

...It won't do the Recto/XXX/XTC -type gain....

It most obviously hasn´t met my guitars, yet... they can be very convincing :laugh2:

I think you'd like this amp, Zerb. There's plenty of gain to spare. If you push a nice, hot p-up thru it, it'll bark, and bite, and put a smile on your face. It's a tough-sounding 20 watts, that's for sure.
