Off Cry Baby issues...

I wanted to ask what is probably a very dumb question...whenever I use my Dunlop crybaby in my fx line it massively changes the whole sound when it is unactivated. While I know all fx will affect the signal, this is really huge, to the point where to get a decent tone I basically have to leave it on all the time, as when off it boosts the bass and muddies everything hugely.

Is there any way round this or do you just set your amp and guitar around the problem? I know Page used to use his wah for tone but am unsure whether he had it on all the time...

Anyway, I'm rambling now...

Hey Pastor of Muppets,
Ya know, I've never had much luck with my Cry Baby in my Effects Loop. Some time based effects, verbs, chours sounds okay there, but OD, Dist, and CryBaby don't to my ears.
I would experiment with placing that in front of your amp and see if it still has the same issues.
Good luck,
Loudriver

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

Do you power your CryBaby with a battery or, AC adapter? I've had weak batteries cause all kind of issues with my pedals.
If it's new or you use an adapter, you might want to look into your cables possibly.
Other than that I'm stumped, maybe look into having it modded into a true bypass.
Good luck,
LD

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

if you dont want it to color your sound, you need a wah with true bypass. if its one of the newer ones, it has it, but if its just a standard (GCB95) crybaby, then it cant be avoided.

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

Input the guitar into the crybaby into the amp input. leave the rest of the fx in the loop

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

A lot of wahs are notorious for sucking tone when bypassed. My old crybaby rolled off a lot of the highs when it was in my signal chain, really muddied up my signal. I'd say get a wah that's true-bypass, or mod yours to true-bypass.

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

Sell it and get a second hand wha thats got true bypass and sounds good. Won't cost you a heap extra if you look hard.

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

Just mod it for true bypass and it'll be fine. Also, I find wahs typically sound better before a Distortion or Overdrive, YMMV.

This exaclty the issue. I use a vox 847 modded for true bypass. The difference is night and day

Same here. Your chorus is the only pedal I'd put in the effects loop. Wahs and overdrives belong in front.

Re: Off Cry Baby issues...

That is exactly what is happening...and it is a 10 year old pedal.

You have 2 options. 1 is to put a true bypass in your wah, or 2 buy a new wah that has true bypass. I have 3 ways 2 of the three have true bypass the one that does not doesn't really give me that much of a tone shift. Sounds like a problem with the wah!
