Off the wall Tele question

Re: Off the wall Tele question

Jeffblue-
Thanks. And of course I would like to see more photos. I thought I was finally done- amps done, guitars done, humbuckers done, single coils sorta done, and now: This whole world of Tele sound I knew nothing about until my buddy showed me how his Onamac Vintage Tele sounded, and I heard the YouTube clip I normally don't watch, but now it is like I just got my first guitar again.
I thought Tele's were just overwound Strat pups and the placing gave them their sound, how wrong can I get. So, let me ask you, Do you like the Tele in your Strat with the low strings being closer to the pup and the high strings further away, or vice versa?
I always thought that the "Hendrix" angle made more sense: a tighter low end and less ice pick on the high end. Really, with any pickups in the Strat, regardless of neck, mid, or bridge. Maybe back then with such drastically different strings (in most cases) in the '50's, but not since Clapton, Hendrix, Page and Beck elevated the guitar to center stage for generations still being born..
Also, does anyone know how Onamac Teles stack up against the the others? I suppose this is a most foolhardy question, as I am right back where I started with all my other pickups, which one is best? There are probably only 2000 models to choose from.
I like the vintage type of all pickups- Seth's, '69 or 57/62 Fender SC's, Antiquities, SH-2 Jazz, so that does narrow it down a whole bunch.
Never liked any Tele NECK pups, I use a Strat on a Tele Squire I have w/a Jazz HBucker in the bridge.
So Jeffblue, any preference on Tele bridge angle, and anyone else have anything to tell me to watch out for?
You have all been very generous to me with your time and suggestions, I really must thank you all very, very much,
Steve Buffington

Re: Off the wall Tele question

Hey,
I just wanted to add, if there are any suggestions to be had, on all my humbuckers, every single one, I chose to go with an A4 Magnet, as that sounds best to my ears. I do not have that choice with a Tele, it seems it is either A5 rods, or a 5/2 type set up. And I hope I get another post from Jeffblue on Tele angle, but I pretty much think I am gonna go "Hendrix angle" on that also, so with the high end closest to the neck, and the low end rods closest to the bridge, I guess A5's make the most sense. Although I could just go straight across. No reason not to try. Never seen it done, but can't see why not.
Namaste and many thanks,
SJB

Google DAG Telstar and prepare to drool.

For the cost of messing with it, you could just buy a whole Telecaster.

Buy a whole Telecaster.

Always raise the pickup closer to the lighter strings but always adjust for the best tone.

Thanks for the pics. Looks like you've been having fun.
I see a few with what looks like a Bill Lawrence L-500 paired with a Seymour Duncan. Which BL(s) and which SD(s) do you have together?

Re: Off the wall Tele question

Jeffblue-
As my generation used to say in the '60's WHAT A TRIP! God Almighty, those brass or whatever full metal jackets are just too cool!
You are one busy guy. You must be single and living on an inheritance to have the time to do what you've done.
Any wisdom on Tele pick up being angled regular or reverse angled? Not raising the pup but having one side closer to the neck or closer to the bridge, maybe I wasn't clear in my last post question. I have been quite unclear lately for some reason.
Thank You,
Really cool pics, great fun!

First guitar photo is of a Warmoth chambered figured Swamp Ash body, Fender Strat neck, Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 and Strat pickups and a Schector humbucker and an LR Baggs X-Bridge.

Second is a Warmoth carved top mahogany body with a Warmoth highly flamed Maple neck, with a pair of Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90s and a Bill Lawrence XL500.

Third is an Edenhaus Black Korina body and a Fender neck, seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 and Strat pickups and a Schector humbucker.

Fourth is a Warmoth Swamp Ash body and a Fender neck, Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 and Tele pickups.

Fifth is a Warmoth Swamp Ash body and a Warmoth neck, Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 and neck and bridge tele pickups.

Sixth is a Warmoth Black Korina capped with Bloodwood body and a Warmoth Bloodwood neck, Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90, Tele neck and bridge pickups.

Seventh is a prototype brass top on Mahogany with Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 and Tele and PRail pickups.

Eighth is a prototype Purpleheart on top of Mahogany with a Bill Lawrence XL500 and a Seymour Duncan JB model pickups.

Ninth is a prototype brass top on Mahogany with a Bill Lawrence XL500 and a Seymour Duncan JB model pickups.

Tenth is a prototype Australian Lacewood on top of Mahogany with Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbucker and JB model and a Bill Lawrence XL500.

Eleventh is a prototype Australian Lacewood on top of Mahogany with Seymour Duncan PRail and a JB model.

I do have a left handed Strat body Warmoth with a Tele pickup in the bridge position and the angle of the pickup is angled in the opposite direction.

Re: Off the wall Tele question

A reverse angle on a Tele pickup is a good sound, but so is the normal angle and an opinion would be subjective. When Jimi Hendrix flipped his' Strats, a reverse angle on the bridge pickup is what he ended up with. Always sounded good to me. About adjusting the pickup closer or farther away from the strings, that is trial and error and playing the guitar to figure how it sounds best. For equal output on the pole pieces.....it would be normal to move the pickup closer to the thinner or smaller gauge strings because the volume, even acoustically, is more diminished than the thicker or larger gauged strings.

Re: Off the wall Tele question

Thanks for the explanations, Jeffblue. Much appreciated.

Yes, thank you, good explanations, had to start counting my toes, ran out of fingers after 10 to keep track of all your guitars!

Thanks guys. I do have more guitars and I make all of them unique. For example, here is my highly modded 2012 Gibson Les Paul Supreme with Seymour Duncan 59/JB pickups, gold pickup surrounds, Wilkinson roller bridge, Kahler brass stop tailpiece, vintage style control knobs, Schaller gold pickup selector tip and strap locks. And Optima gold strings.
