Offered A 1972 Gibson Les Paul In Trade.... Looking 4 Your Input....

Alright guys... Heres the deal..... I recently put my Mesa Rect-O-Verb Head and 2x12 Mesa Cab up for sale on Craigslist. I got a response from a guy who offered me a 1972 Gibson Les Paul for it. My question is would you trade him? Anyone know what the value of a 1972 Gibson Les Paul would be approx? My intentions for selling the amp were to fund for a VOX AC-30 but so far this guy is the only person that is interested (hadn't originally intended on trading for anything but this offer has me interested). I'm requesting pictures from the guy right now. Any input?

The guitar is finished in Tobacco Burst supposedly. :)

With a LP that old would I need to worry about possibly getting a fake? I'm emailing the guy asking for pictures as I type this. I will post pics if the guy doesn't flake on his offer. Thanks

Check for neck repairs. Thats what I have been seeing 70's LPs going for with those type repairs ($1300). Most 70's Gibsons are runnin around 2k and more, but I don't see alot of them selling for that. Maybe it's the economy.

I'd certainly consider it, but you need to see the guitar really and not just the pics. Hope you can post some pics though.

Screw the images, just drive and look at it. If you got a reply through Craigslist, he must be within driving distance. That sounds a little too good to be true but in might be severely reliced :naughty:

Then again, it could be a Custom versus Standard of CS since you did not mention a specific model

I wanna see pics initially and definately wanna go see it in person before I make my decision. It will be deal breaker if the guy isn't local though. Unless of course he wants to drive to me (I'm not in the position to be able to leave town at the moment).

We will see... I'm waiting to hear back (He may flake though who knows). All he said was 1972 Gibson Les Paul in Tobacco Burst. Believe me I will get specifics. :)

If I had another decent amp I'd probably just trade him and keep the LP just because it's vintage and was made 13 years before I was born. Kindof a neat thought.... :)

This.

Busted headstocks & other splits are common...

It's also going to depend on which model LP... there's Standards, Customs, Deluxes... a lot of butchered deluxes cut up for humbuckers; LP recording & other oddballs... though, they might be later on.

Some of them are pancake bodies, some will be one or two piece, and a lot of them will be ungodly heavy. I used to play in a band with a guy who had a '70s LP Custom and it must've weighed close to 20 pounds.

Re: Offered A 1972 Gibson Les Paul In Trade.... Looking 4 Your Input....

Forgive my ignorance but what's a pancake body?

A body made from multiple layers... usually 3 or more stacked together in a laminate. Not plywood exactly, but some of the layers might be a 1/4" thick.

Aint that a friggin Frehly style model? Looks legit to me.If it checks out then Do it. It'd easier to sell than the Mesa I think , and right now it'd probably bring around 16 if Im not mistaken.

The original Frehley model was a Custom '73 triple pup model and not tobacco burst

Got a response from a potential buyer... If that falls through I'm not sure what I'm gonna do.

Dude, I would try to get that as cheap as possible w/ that line running through the top. I am sure it plays killer. It also is a pancake body obviously

I'd be getting this in a trade so I'd be a little over $1,300.00 into the LP. All the vintage LPs have the lines as Gibson used to glue up 3 pieces of wood to create a body from.
