Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

Since no one really uses the Seymour Duncan Research Lab as it was intended, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread to see what we would like to see from the good folks at SD. Here's what I want:

A new pickup that carries on the concept of the Twangbanger. Maybe give it an option to tap it so that position 2 maintains the Strat vibe.

A non-custom shop Texas hot style single coil. Something that can pull the SRV type tone. I find this area of SD's product range is a bit lacking.

A single coil that combines two guages of wires. Don't know how well it would work, as I don't have the skill or patience to do it myself, but if ya'll haven't looked into yet, you should.

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

a neck humbucker that has REAL single coil pickup in pole position...wanna be able to split to a genuine single coil neck...Fishman has found a way to do it with their voice three...it is excellent but don't like actives at all...

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

Well, I think people *did* use the SDRL as it was intended, but the person who initially set it up no longer works for SD. But I will play along here: I'd like to see a production late 60's-early-to-mid-70s Strat pickup.

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

the pups in srv's #1 were pretty wimpy, weaker than a ssl1 by a bit. the huge tone came from big strings tuned down 1/2 step into big amps with a tube screamer. if you had that setup and stevies chops youd be there.

i like the twangbanger just fine but its not really very tele like to my ears. its a cool pup for sure though. an a5 twangbanger would sound more tele like i bet. its the baseplate and a2 magnet that push it away from a typical strat sound more than the wind.

ive made a few strat bridge pups that have about 8000 turns of #42 wire then 4000 turns of #43 with a tap between em. the people that have them love them

it would be cool to have a late 60's small diameter magnet, 7600 turns of #42 pe pup in the production line for sure

when you go active you can sculpt things a lot. the stagmag sounds like a strat pup when split, but the humbucker sound is pretty different than a gibson style bucker. if they made an alnico 5 stagmag (like the old mag) it would be cool but still wont sound like a bucker

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

Twangbanger with A5 mags and tap that cuts 25% of the wind.

And slightly overwound version of SSL-1 for the neck

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

Single coils don't generate a lot of engagement in the SDUGF. Fact.

Yeah....in fact accurate vintage is not what SD is about TBH. Most people find that sort of thing weak or bright (or both). Plus the pickups tend to be very picky about the guitars they are in most of the time.
Duncan does very well out of the vintage styled, but fattened or beefed up to make them much more multi-genre versatile.

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

P90 slightly-hotter-than-vitange tappable to vintage. For all those Gibson Juniors and similiar stuff.

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

A pickup that covers up my mistakes and makes me sound like a pro.
A pickup that sounds exactly like the tone I hear in my head regardless of amp and effects.

Riogrande already makes those. They even have non metallic bases just like real single coils. Pickups like the stagmag are set on a normal humbucker base and the metal in it influences the tone and makes it less like a real strat when split.

Re: Offical SDUGF SDRL Thread

I do a pickup with 43 and 44 that Darth did a review of, though they were also different magnets for each coil. Just a guess, but you might get the same outcome from just having bigger offsets with the same gauge (?) which might not make it worth the hassle.

More than just the Phat Cats as an option for single coils in a humbucker mount might be interesting :)
