Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

In the interest of simplifying the selection process I volunteer to not be the Beta tester.

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

I know someone who could be an amazing BETA tester for the neck pickup. He has vast knowledge and experience in guitar pickups from many companies.
Let me know if interested!

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

I would love to test that pickup! I don't know who would not be open to testing any Seymour Duncan pickup. The only claim I have to anything is that I could run it through a Blackstar ID60 1x12 (massively capable of many things) into Garage Band (Mac stuff). I only have one example of a recording that I did around 3/2014 (Garage Band Mac) after not having played for 8 years and then coming back again to what I loved most from my youth. I am 34, and have only been playing guitar again for about 18 months. But, either way, here is the thing I recorded awhile ago. I would like to think I am much better now. I hang out around blues pentatonic, harmonic minor, and minor stuff lately. I usually play 7 string guitar now, but that recording is some old stuff. I used an Ibanez SZ520 with stock hardware and electronics. I have two 6 string guitars left to put it into, a basswood Schecter with a 59 and Invader, and a mahogany Ibanez RG with a Liquifire and D-activator. I can also solder anything.

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Thanks guys Lt Kojak has volunteered to lead the beta testing and recording of a demo for your feedback. Basically, we want you all to have a chance to hear it and see if it's something you'd like to get, or whether we might tweak it once more to refine the lows/mids/highs before going with the final version. You can expect a demo in the next couple months.

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

I'd like to thank the Direction of the Seymour Duncan Co. in the name of Scott Olson, for choosing me to have the honor of doing the testing of the first prototype of the Hy-Bro neck version.

From what I've been told, I reckon I'll be receiving the p'up from the CS anywhere between the first and second week of September,

In August I may post about the prepping of the tools and elements chosen to do the testing.

Until then, stay tuned!

You using a '59/C in the bridge of the same guitar for comparison?

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Hopefully there will be a multitude of styles of music to showcase the versatility of said pickup

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Congrats! :beerchug:

If I may suggest, please also include a range of other pickup samples so we can get an idea of how much player tone is influencing the samples. I know how a Jazz neck sounds when I play it through my rack and my amps/cabs, but how does it sound when someone else plays it?

Also, if I may, please test it in an off-the-shelf guitar with either stock or easily-available and reputable electronics - not everyone's keen on the boutique pots and custom guitars of exquisite woods and utter uniqueness - and include a clean tone running direct. Not everyone has a JC120, or vintage Jensens, or a 1960A/B 4x12 with V30s and N/D magnets, et al, or an MD-421, or Mogami Pro mic cables, all of which have been proven to influence recorded tone.

Further, while I'm sure most would love to hear it in a mix, if you do such a sample, please include the isolated guitar track so we can get a clear sense of the pickup's dynamic range without anything being masked by the mix or double-tracking/layering.

Oh, man... I'm out of breath just by reading you post, lol!

Joking aside, you made quite a few good suggestions, which I'll take into consideration when the time comes.

And for the rest of the good people of the SDUGF, feel free to come up with ideas of what you'd like to see/hear in such a test that haven't been done and think might be useful.

I'm all ears! ;)

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

It's a bit strict and detailed, I know, but the pickup review videos I've seen and audio tracks I've heard told me more about the player and the amp than the pickup. I know how a JB sounds in a USA Jackson KV with a Kahler bridge through a Marshall poweramp and a Rocktron Piranha when Dave Mustaine plays it, and it's mixed and double-tracked and processed by a studio engineer through a studio console, and I know how a Lil'59 in a vintage Strat sounds through a Trainwreck with some random guy's mods played by some guy in Australia I've never heard of into the lowest-quality camcorder known to man, after YouTube has further compressed the crap out of it.

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Just play a cover of a Dream Theatre guitar line through a Roland cube. That should cover enough musical ground through a plain enough amp.

Re: Official Forum Pickup Beta Tester

Sweet!

Now... What sort of amps/modelers/etc do you have? Just trying to get an idea in my head what you might do.

Well, modelers wise, I have the following at my disposal:

Hardware:
* Fender Mustang Floor
* Behringer V-Amp3
* Johnson J-Station
* Yamaha Magicstomp

Software:
* Scuffham S-Gear 2.53
* Amplitube 3
* JamVox III

Amp-wise, I own an AC30 based, three preamp first stage with a Blackface, a Plexi and a SLO "boutique" tube amp with a "Robben Ford approved" Celestion Heritage C12-65 reissue.

There is a broad selection of tube amps in the studio; I'm pretty sure that when the time comes, I'll have quite the embarrassment of choice!

HTH,

To the lurkers: this is a good time to register AND post.

I promess to at least try my best to make your voice heard. Come out of the shadows and speak up!

I'll be listening.

Or should I create a Facebook page to document the event.? What do you think?

I'm all ears, folks!

I'd say keep everything here. Doing everything between two sites could become a bit messy.
