Which would you prefer? An original Floyd Rose or a Wilkinson with a locking tuners and a roller nut?

Why would you prefer your choice?

How good is the range (of of lowering/raising pitch) on a Wilkinson compared to a Floyd?

Thanks you your input. :22:

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

for heavy whammy action, nothing beats a floyd. i have a guitar that has a wilkenson trem and its great but not the same as a floyd

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I´d take the OFR. I prefer the feel of it, and the range is greater, as well as being impossible to knock out of tune.

I have an axe with a VS-100 /Sperzel combo, and it stays in tune almost as well. But it´s less responsive (a more "vintage", strat tremmish feel) ans has a smaller range. I do prefer the tone of a Wilkinson, though. A bit less steely and warmer.

Depending on what you´re planning on doing, both are great systems

+1. I preffer the Wilkinson myself, as I don't need a whole lot of range, just more than vintage. :burnout:

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I don't up-pull a lot, so Wilkinsons are very cool to me. However, something just feels more substantial about a Floyd, plus you can go down ridiculously low if you want ;) My Ibanez Edge Pro trem is my favorite, along with the Kahler Spyder. Both are extremely solid and smooth operators.

I guess I can't really answer the question, I like them both!

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

the Wilkinson...I can change strings in a few seconds with no wrenches, and I can divebomb till the strings are slack and return in tune. It is lighter than a Floyd and doesn't go out of tune when you rest your hand on it.

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I'm also in the same predicament. I've always played Pauls and I bought a floyd guitar for the first time. I hate messing around with the thing and a friend told me that I should just block it and use it like a strat. This way I can change tunings in a flash also. Is there even many songs out there were up pulls are necessary? I am kind of thinking I should just learn to set up the floyd properly myself though. I read all up how to do it, might just take more practice.

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I have two guitars with Wilkinson. Great trem, but - at least in Austria - it's impossible to get any spare parts. One guitar manufacturer informed me that Wilkinson does not offer any spare parts except trem-arm. I find this behaviour extremely annoying and would never buy any hardware from them any more.

BTW: does anybody have an idea where to get the screws for adjusting saddle height and compensation?

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I really like the Ibanez Edge Pro. For me, it yields a fuller tone than the OFR and I don't have to cut the ball-ends, giving it a string-thru feel.

Thanks guys...

one last question. Sre the Schaller units offered on Warmoth's store any good?

I usually stand by floyd stuff cuz it's delivered great performance every time but I'm always open to new stuff.

The Schallers are just as good as an OFR. The tone is warmer, and they´re a bit less responsive. Pure preference, I use both regularly ;)

Wait, you have to cut the ball ends off to string a floyd?

To string ANY true double locking trem you have to do this ;)

There are Floyd "copies", some that even used to bear the "Floyd Rose" logo, where the ball ends are left on and the string is strung through the saddle, with the ball end being "inside" what would usually be the locking screw.

While these may be fine for entry level, I personally thinkk they´re the biggest POS I´ve ever seen ;)

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

I've heard a LOT about kahler and Ibanez bridges... is it possible to order an Ibanez bridge on it's own?

C'mon, Zerb! You of all people should know that you don't have to cut off the ball ends (I haven't done that in 15 years). You just string it backwards, putting the unballed end through the tuning pegs, under the locking nut, and into the locking saddles.

Re: OFR vs. Wilkinson/locking tuners

If you use the trem heavily then NOTHING beats an Original Floyd Rose for staying in tune.
The Wilky will sound warmer and is easier to deal with when changing string's and setting intonation.

I have five guitars with FR trems. Three are Originals. But I really dont use the trem that much. I blocked the trem on one of my Hamer's and unlocked the nut. WOW!!! It's like a new guitar. Resonates just like my stop tail Wolfy...

Same thing happened when I did that with my Alvarez! You mean just so it doesn't go up, right?
