Oh Cool.....It's Here!

I got mine yesterday...I'll tell ya what John, I went last weekend and tried a Dr. Z Airbrake, a THD Hot Plate and a "The Ultimate Attenuator" then lastnight and today tried my Weber Mass (I went with the 50 watt Mini version...same attenuator you got but w/o the toine stack for DI use) and I have to say they are all killer units for what they do. I like them all but the fact that the weber works on any impedence and that fact that it was a goo bit less than the Dr. Z ($300) and the Ultimate (over $500) I like the Weber just fine. Great for trimming down the db's but (like you and Lew already said) NOT to make any amp over 10 or so watts a practice amp and also remember...an Attenuator is NOT a master volume...

John, let me know how ya' like it with your Marshall. I had a hard time dialing in a decent tone/decent volume on mine.

Works very well with cleaner tones, but didn't seem to like the Marshalls at all.....works GREAT for Stevo though. :dunno:

So far so good.....I'll let you know furthers during the week....Might be that it works great but only with certain amps?

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

I had a feeling that was it....it got along really well with a Hiwatt but not so much with a JCM800, JMP NMV, or Splawn Quick Rod.

Most importantly, it's works very well with the Edana :bigthumb:

BTW...I got the 100watt version too for the very same reason you did:beerchug:

Oh and I have to say....this newer model looks a whole lot nicer than my huge battleship gray older model box:wink:

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

I really like my Weber Mass. Great unit. I use it really knock things down. Yes, it affects the tone, but less so than any of the other units I ahve tries. Additionally the variable ohm slector means it is way more versitile than almost any othe run it like this made. Using it with the line out works with adecent cab emulator for recording as well. The line out on these has its owm eq section which is a real plus as well.

This is the best of the bunch of these units to me.

Hey John-John!!
Whaddup, brudda? That looks like a really cool toy. I just went to Weber's website and checked it out for more details and am very interested in this piece of equipment. My 50 watt Marshall DSL and 60 watt Blues DeVille are great amps, but I've never been able to crank 'em much over 4 without rattlin' everything off the walls. I'm thinking the Mass would be a great way for me to be able to crank those amps up to get better and clearer tone, but yet keep the volume down to at least something just below ear-splitting.
I was wondering where you ordered this unit from? I'm getting a tax return this year  so I might go ahead and snag one up. From what I understood at the website, I should get the 100 watt model, no?

Sounds good John. I'm gonna have to hook up with you for a couple of pedal mods here pretty quick, to. I'll email you about that.
Thanks, and give us more info on the Mass when you have time.

So John...now that it's been a day or 2 what do you think about yours?

Haven't really spent the time with it that I wanted to yet? I'm on shift today and spent sometime with my buddy Mike who lost his 25 y/o son to a motorcycle accident Thurs and Fri,funeral home,etc...Been a bad week overall..

E mail me anytime Bobby and we'll get ya squared away...

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

John and Lew bring up an interesting point. Is it possible that the "gratiness" and "fizziness" are not caused by the Mass, but are part of the natural sound of the overdriven amp? Which, of course, would be masked by the SPL of 50 to 100 watt amp set on 8 or 9?

The Mass just allows you to hear that by attenuating the SPL.

I don't know . . . just asking.

Artie

btw John, nice score. ;)

does weber have a homepage? and what does an attenuator do? just lower the level of output and change the impedance. where do you put it. i'm looking at buying a nomad 100 combo. would it work in that situation?

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

I just have to know
how is it much different than a HOT PLATE? If it is tonally superior, I would buy this for the tone shaping and for the fact you can work with any impedance

Weber's site is www.tedweber.com

An attenuator lets you crank an amp then bring the overall level down...however, it is not a master volume in a box and will not turn a 100 or 50 or even a 20 watt amp into a bedroom/practice amp. You can use it with a combo.

I'll tell ya...I have tried Hot Plates, the Dr. Z airbrake a Marshall Power Brake, and an Ultimate Attenuator...they ALL mess with your tone but Im gonna be honest...I just got my Weber Mini Mass last week and I like it jusy as good as any other unit I've ever used, I love the fact that I can go 4/8/16 ohms with it (you can even add a 2 ohm setting for a $10 up charge!). It's a great unit.

To echo what Christian said, the ability to switch impedences & the cost was why I bought one. I think all of these devices will do something to your tone, especially if you attenuate to the max.

From what I understand, the MASS, Hot Plate, Dr. Z, & Ultimate are all great with equal pros & cons.

I like the MASS for what it is & it works well with my Edana (I don't use it with the Fuchs...it's a loud damn 20watts, but sounds great at a decent volume).

The only experience I have with a Hot Plate was with the built in one in a Univalve & it did it's thing in that amp.

Never tried the others, but have heard that the Marshall is the worst of the bunch.

Tone is so subjective....what an attenuator does to that tone just adds a subchapter to the never ending argument!

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

I think I Like keeping the volume lower on my Marshall and using the right pedal instead of the Weber Mass.....I'm finding there's this grainey, harshness riding over my notes(Like a stock Boss DS1) that I don't like....I'm attempting to hook up with Ted and see if I can return it...Maybe cool for most people, but I'm really not that thrilled with it overall after more time with it today and after the honeymoon..LOL

Re: Oh Cool.....It's Here!

You're describing what I found in using it with the Marshalls !!!

That's too bad John.

Did you try it with any other amps...maybe a Fender?

Stevo dials in a GREAT tone with his Plexi & I think Kevlar uses one with good results, but I guess I wasn't that patient.

Now with the Hiwatt & especially the Edana, I dialed it right on in & it works GREAT......:dunno:

If there's no return policy, I might be interested in your NEWER model (I like the switches up front) & I'll sell mine........

With all the great sounding pedals I have,I'm finding it best to just dial things down clean and use the pedals....I'm sending it back today for a full refund minus the shipping....Ted just wrote me back about it...Since my BF Fender Pro Reverb is a nice, full, clean tone,I don't need that amp attenuated....The Valvetronix head sounds fine as is also....I tryed it and it isn't for me,no biggie....Live and learn.... ;o)
