There's the obligatory "what gear do you want" thread going around... I've kind of half-assed wanted to trade my $WR SM-900 for an Eden WT-800, so I thought I'd post either that or the Mesa Big Block 750, until I found this...

Either 1200w into 4 ohms bridged or 600w into 2 ohms PER CHANNEL. Pretty much the same idea as the SM-900- but built better and 300 more of headroom.

I thought I was GAS proof at this stage...:smack:

3. nothing sounds worse that breaking up bass notes. It sounds like the drummer farting in the microphone. :D

TGB, that'll look real nice next to the Marshall and Park....lol.

Ok, everyone needs to read post #4 again.

Bass needs more power than guitar to sit in the mix right. This is plain fact. The more clean headroom available for the bass, the better. Just because it is 1200 watts doesn't mean all of it will be used.

A 100 watt Marshall or whatever halfstack or stack will have no problem keeping up with that. The guitar is in a totally different frequency range so it will stand out easily regardless.

Now, bass that is distorted because of the amp clipping sounds terrible, plain and simple. Most bass amps are solid state and solid state does not clip very nicely, especially when the amp is made to run clean in the first place (which bass amps are). Very few players get/got a good distorted sound, that I've heard anyway. Cliff Burton (who used fuzz boxes) and Lemmy Kilmeister (Marshall bass and guitar amp).

Exactly! Anything under 400w SS is about useless in a rock band setting with a drummer, 2 guitars (not to mention keyboards). Any less is either clipping the amp and either causing damage to your speakers or the amp itself/ or you're not being heard. I have 2 600w amps that are fine, but they don't have a lot of clean headroom- especially in the lows. They get an awesome rumble- but you're not accurately reproducing even a clean 42hz at significant volume.

The 900w amp is great- but I'm just ready for a change. First, I lost all respect and confidence in $WR because of the way they handled a customer service issue with me several years ago. In fact, they blew a lot of things with that, if I could recoup what I had in the amp it would have been traded in long ago. Secondly (and it sort of relates to the first), it overheats. I ended up having to install a fan in the rack because it kept doing overheating- it doesn't look like cooling was much more than an afterthought in the design. Third, the EQ is touchy- a 3 band Semi-Parametric EQ is overkill for most bass players. I really liked the EQ on the Mesa M-Pulse.

I've played a lot of Eden amps, but I've never owned one- this just looks like the one to get.

So I'll just say it has a variety of colored knobs, and pretty green lights! :baby:

If I were to get a SERIOUS bass amp, I might also look at Eden. I also dig EBS (owned a Gorm 300 2x10, our guitarist's TSL100 halfstack actually couldn't keep up with it. Christ, that little thing was loud!) and Ashdown (currently own an ABM300 2x10, not quite as loud as the EBS but works well for band practice and sounds nice and warm - and dirty if I want to).

My perfect setup would be a combination of EBS clean tone and Ashdown dirt. So probably an EBS Fafner (600 watts) or EBS TD650 (lucky guess?...bingo! 650 watts!), that have a solid state clean channel and a tubedriven second channel that can go from warm clean to an insane I-think-I-crapped-my-pants-tone. I'd propably never drive it over a slight crunch. Awesome amps!

In all honesty, I think I prefer more of a SS preamp tone. Years ago a bass player I shared a studio with had one of the nifty 400w Marshalls. It had a fader for the preamp- all SS to all 12ax7. I generally liked it more between 7:00 and 10:00- the SS end of the spectrum. What's also fun is getting a hold of a Mesa Bass 400+ or one of the 300 watt Sunns- but I don't feel like lugging around a 70 lb head.

On my Ashdown, the blender pot is at about 11:00 to 13:00 depending on the sound I'm after, with the gainknob usually in that same area. This also depends on the bass I'm using though. Although there's an active/passive input selector switch on the amp, the signal still differs quite a bit. And off course a P-bass sounds very nice with a slightly dirty tubesound :burnout:

All I know is that any bassist I've played with that had an Eden World Tour 800 had THE tone!!!

One thing I love about the Edens is that you can also control the frequency band of each EQ knob. I don't see that feature on this new one, so I wonder if those channels will have the same versatility of dialing in the tone, that the 800 has. They give you an extra channel, but took away the frequency knobs.

Eden's must be selling like "hotcakes", we get a bunch of 'em in at the shop....

I don't really keep up with "trends" in bass amps..... but they do sound good from what I've heard.... Had an Aguilar come through that sounded nice too!

Ahh, just get 12 100 watters, plug in to one, slave the other 11. There ya go, 1200 watts. Problem is, you need that many cabinets too....LOL.
