OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

WTH, 1100-1300 USD for an MiM strat? Who's gonna buy this? When they first came out they were 1000 USD list price for MIA and street price was considerably lower.

Exactly!! I own 4 Charvels from the past 7-8 years or so. I have a 2008 Style 2 2H that I bought new for $700. My other 3 are ones are from the past couple of years. I paid $600 new for each of them. I think that is the perfect price point for those guitars. Don't get me wrong, they are not cheap pieces of crap, but there is no way in hell that I would ever pay more than $700 for one of those guitars. To me that is where they should be priced. If they were they would sell more.

I kinda agree. My Charvel is an awesome guitar that I love, and after putting a 5-way switch into it it's incredibly versatile. It has been my number one for years now . . . That said, I'd have a heck of a time bringing myself to pay a grand for one. It's a well made tool, not a collector's item piece of crafted beauty like a PRS or a Gibbie.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

To be fair, I would be willing to pay that amount of money for top-of-the-line hardware (that means true OFR or Gotoh, not Special or even the 1000) and electronics and while I don't particularly care about country of origin, I would expect MiA-level workmanship, fit and finish (what it was SUPPOSED to be, not what it currently is) and that would still be for a trans finished true figured top (i.e. not plain top + figured veneer), not the opaque finishes which should be at 150-250 USD less.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I'd have to try one but they seem overpriced.

I got my 1987 3A brand new back then for $450. There's always used guitars.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Finally H-H hard tail with coil split and no-load tone pot. Personally, I would have loved the HS to be transformed into HSS with and a 5 way switch while keeping the hardtail, am still waiting. And there is absolutely no reason to be more expensive.

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Hi,
Did you happen to see how much of the body would have to be routed to put a SSS configuration in there? I really want to do this as well but I don't want to compromise the wood where it may make the post for the FR loose or break through. Any other recommendations with regards to this? Thanks

For the SoCal with a pickguard that I have, it has the route for the middle single coil and for sure you can put a single coil in the neck, however if you put the strat pickguard on top you will see the tip of the slanted single coil will overlap with a bit of wood. This is the same story every time with any Strat fitted with a FR. Fortunately you should be able to solve this by either getting a custom made pickguard to properly position the bridge pickup OR you can always put a humbucker that splits very well (Screamin Demon? PRail?, StagMag?).

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I do also hate the new pricing.. esp with the lower grade hardware. would still be too much with an OFR and name keys. Someone (I think Jolly) mentioned the dislike for chrome hardware and zebs. I agree. at least on the trans black one (that I really do like ) the trem is more of that smoke color or whatever they call it. Its soo close to what Ive wanted for years.. and what I want would be at least a grand more...

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

I think the new features are cool, and some of those colours are super rad... but the new price is not.

Still holding out for an MIJ pro Mod neck and getting a custom slime green body with one slanted humbucker...

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Again, not happy bout the new price, but do like the switching. I dont have any guits that have the no load on the tone. The So cals come with Duncans, which is cool When I bought mine, I had to rip out the Dimarzios

Thanks for the input. Do you know if the original Fender Strat pickguard lines up with everything (pickup holes, screw holes, etc) except the bridge position? I thought I read somewhere that the three controls (vol, tone) won't fit in the Charvel cavity but I could have imagined that due to late, LATE zombie-like nights scouring of the Internet for information. If this is the case then maybe a custom pickguard maker can create a "Fender Strat" pickguard with a 1/4" offset for that pickup only or even make it slightly less slanted. What are your thoughts?

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

Regarding Warmoth pickguards, you can specify (somewhere on the form) that it's cut for a Floyd route at the back (forget how it's worded exactly). I ordered several pickguards for my SoCals from them a few years ago, and they were all Floyd-ready.

Only trouble was that Fender and Charvel have different neck heel widths, and I had to modify the neck cutout of the pickguard to fit around the neck comfortably.
As well, the cutout for the Charvel pickguard's bridge pickup was farther forward than the Warmoth, which meant the back of the pickup bumped the body.

I tried to do a S-S-S pickguard, but the body cavity would have to be routed to allow the bridge single to fit.

However, all the holes lined up, so that's good.

But that was with the USA SoCals. No idea on the Japanese or the impending MIM models.

Hi, When you tried the S/S/S pickguard, was it an actual "Fender" pickguard?

Re: OH YEAH!!!!!!! Charvel Pro mod info!

None were Fender-branded, if that's what you mean. They were all Warmoth. If you mean Fender-spec, they all were, because Warmoth cling religiously to Leo Fender's designs regarding neck heel/pocket dimensions and bridge single location.
