Gibson has finally realised that , despite all the purists saying 'Oh that's not a '59 so it must be crap' , the the majority of players DO want a volute neck to stop the oh so common neck breakage, they DO want mini humbuckers and P90's as an option, they are sick of the endless amount of standards being produced - Classic, Historical etc - Can you even buy just a standard 'Standard' now?
Why is Gibson now trying to re-create all the 70's, 60's n 50's tributes, that are sold out on pre-order. Prob because that is what the 'players' want, not the 5% of 'wall hangers' and celebrity colectors that insist on having '59 speced guitars. And anyone with a '59 is too scared to play it anyway.

Gibson does the worst neck binding in the industry. Why would you want it??!!!
That gold top is the bees knees. Or the Firebird (in tobacco burst) would be a real rocker.

People are not sick of Standards, if they were they wouldn't sell but look around...they do!
Those tribute guitars sell out pre order because they are well priced guitars in a crappy economic time.
Lots of "players" play Historics...I'm one of them...I also gig my extremely limited production 1982 Moderne and my 1967 ES-335 and have no plans on letting up.
There are several guys out there that gig real 50's bursts too...Joe Bonamassa for example has 3 out on tour right now, Brad Whitford and Joe Perry each one one or 2, Sir Paul McCartney has one of two left handed 1960 Bursts EVER made on tour...they are out there.

The headstock breakage was due to a) thin @$$ 60's necks, and b) high @$$ players dropping them.
The Volute ACTUALLY causes breaks in the headstock which are infinitely more difficult to repair than those on the nut itself.
And how many Les Pauls have you EVER seen with a broken neck anyway? Besides - the three piece maple neck is indestructable. I drop notes by bending the neck like it has a Floyd. Been doing it for 35 years on my #1 1979.
Now - the important thing here:
A Gibson with a Maple neck is a beautiful thing. And the size/shape of that neck is excellent. Better, IMO than either the skinny @$$ 60's necks or the baseball bat 50's necks.

Les Pauls have varied guitar to guitar. You could have easily got a 59 with mushy sounding wood and a crappy wind as a good one, as an amazing one.
There are 50's, 60's 70's 80's 90' and 2000's dogs. There are also amazing righteous guitars. Most of them are at worst good.
I think most people who complain the loudest don't have one, and rarely play them.
Like I said in two other threads. That Frehley Richlite/Chambered was a KILLER guitar period. Had nothing to do with the Frehley factor. Sorry of you don't agree - but if not you are a collector, not a player.
