not sure what to do...

I like my JB to a point..I love the harmonics and the output and the agressivness..the harmonics kill and it's got a real percussive (EVH brown sound thumpin' action) that I like

but sometimes it just sounds like there's a real high upper mid spike that I can't dial out...

I've been thinkin' of switching pots..I've been told that I have a 500k pot in my ESP skulls and snakes..so I was thinkin' of puttin' in a 250 k pot...

this seems like an easier first step than changin' the pup..no need to pull the strings out, take the pickup out, etc, etc..

I know alotta people, even seymour himself, have said that puttin' a 250k pot with a JB tames the highs and makes it smoother, more pleasing to the ear...

waht does it do to the REST of the eq curve though? won't make it mushy or mess with the output at all with it? this is my first time messing with pots

I'm thinkin' of doin' that first and if I'm not happy with it, maybe puttin' a custom in there with the standard 500k pot...

what say you?

If you like the lows and mids of your pickup and just want to tame the highs go 250.You could even search for 300 or 400(a la PRS) pots. But if you also want more lows and low-mids,go Custom.

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

I think I am gonna try the pot first...it needed a new one..since it's a push/pull, it tends to go every so often..and I wanted to replace it with a push/push

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

Get a resistor 500k or up parallel to your pot! Cost you nothing and much easier to put in than a new pot! if you get the right resistor you can look for the pot with the right value! Keep it simple!

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

I use 250k with no tone pot as a compromise... the difference is subtle though subtle changes can make wonders sometimes ;)

jury's still out on what I'm gonna do..but right now I'm leaning towards just getting a custom trembucker and tryin' that out...I hear good thing s=)

PRS uses 500k

Ask Lew what he thinks about the JB with 250k pots. I know what he thinks but you need to hear it from him.

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

Two 1 meg resistors, in parallel, between input and ground will knock a 500k down to 250.

I'll have to send him a PM..the longer I wait, the more pickup options I torture myself with..LOL

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

Oh, hell, go to www.lewsguitars.com, get his number and give him a call. He's in the mountain time zone so he's probably not at the shop yet. He'll give you the lowdown on his experience with it. All good marks too.

Shredder, what are the specs on the wood for your ESP? If I amnot mistaken I have the same exact woods in my ESP. Ebony fretboard, maple neck and body, neck through.

I am looking to get a pickup that works better with harmonics and is slightly brighter than the TZ I have in the bridge.

I'm all for throwing a JB in but I dont want to have shrilling highs, especially since the guitar is made of such bright woods. If the 250k pot does the trick, I will go that route.

mine's slight different..maple neck, alder body and rosewood finger board...bolt on

I ended up going with a rio grande BBQ, f spaced....LOL...

when I get it in, I'll give the results...hopefully this is my last stop on the pickup search train!

not sure that the JB will be a good fit in a maple guitar...they're pretty bright/punchy as it is...

I think a JB would be well suited to soemthing darker..like a mahogany...at least with the stock pots!! going 250k might be what the doctor ordered...

the BBQ comes highly recommended by scott splawn and just about all people who use them...usually the last pickup they install in a number of different guitars..so we shall see

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

Once you get that BBQ in there post some new videos on your site. I have a video of a LP with a BBQ running through a "Kotch". Sounded freaking killer. Different axe and amp, but perfect tone was there. Doesn't Dave have a BBQ in his Strat that he runs through his Splawn? Where'd ya pickup the BBQ?

Re: ok, a custom or a jb with a 250k pot??

You're a nut...LOL. You shoulda waited until you got the 250k pot. IMO, you should still try that first and then go from there. The JB with a 250k pot in an alder body, maple/rosewood neck will sound really nice.
