Closed ear headphones are not as accurate as open ear.
Sony makes a nice pair for about $100.

sennheiser. The open air ones are fantastic, and arguably the best headphones money can buy. I have the iso-style 280pro's though for monitoring and I like them a lot, even though they don't sound quite as good as the hifi open air style.

+1 to both TwilightOdessy and DA.

sennheissers are bit on the expensive side but worth it. check out the shape to be sure you like it before you buy. see if they're comfy.

I have a Sennheiser eH2270. It's a closed-back set of monitoring headhones. It has an incredible clarity and transparency to the highs and depth to the bass. I tried AKG's, Sony's and other Sennheisers, both open- and closed-back ones, but liked this one the most.

I dont recommend JVC, had those and the POD fell a foot or 2 and the headphone jack was broken in half. The jack was flimsy n cr@ppy. Now im using a pair of large panasonics with my POD and they are doing good, no complaints so far. £25.

What Uni are you going to?

Under normal circumstances, I would argue that point . . . but considering the source, I'll have to re-access my position. Perhaps its just the ones I've had experience with. Closed headphones that I've owned and listened to included AKG K-240's, Beyer-Dynamic's, and Stax. While open-ear phones lean more toward the "portable" range, ie., Sony MDF series, Koss, etc.

Anyway, here's a great website for learning about different phones. While they have they're own biases, the info is pretty good.

I've been very happy with my POD thru Fostex headphones.... They are big over sized studio headphones and sound amazing.

I rely on my Sony MDR-7506.

Re: ok, any headphone recommendations?

I use both, actually. Sony makes a great set, and they're not terribly pricey. Some situations dictate one or the other.

Sennheiser HD280 Pro...

I returned about 3 other models before keeping these.

Artie, I think you got open and closed-ear reversed ;)

I've just never heard any open-ear headphones that had any decent bass response. I've heard several closed-ear that did.
