What is a 'T-top"?

I don't remember when they started, but Gibson pickups in the 60s and into the 70s had bobbins molded with a 'T' in the top. I stole this pic from a listing on Reverb for a T-Top from 1968:

Gibson stopped using T-Tops around 1980; I'm sure there are other members who know a bit more about them than I do.

Re: OK, dumb question

OK, the thing that explained why they're called thay doesn't show, so school me.

I swear though, that I've heard guitars called t-tops, including teles, which wouldn't make sense.

OK, previous post showed up while I was typing this.

Thanks.

Re: OK, dumb question

1967 – 1980 (“T-top”): “T” on bobbin top, Chrome cover, Alnico 5, polyurethane wire, automated winding begins ‘65 – ‘68, some ’69 – ’73 pickup covers embossed “Gibson”, “patent no.” sticker on baseplate ’67 – ’74, (patent number metal-stamped beginning 1974), ink stamp with date ’77 – ’80, ohms average 7.5k – consistently reading between 7.3k – 8.0k.

Re: OK, dumb question

The wind that made the T-top what it is started earlier that the T-stamped bobbins. I think 65 was when the automation/wind/K rating started the t-top 'tonality'

Embossed covers are '72.
