OK, duncan distortion nickel cover review

Hails guys
i bought a duncan distortion nickel cover from KLINKDETROIT , trem version.
i expected MORE output and more agressivenes...
the mids and highs are a bit dry and sharp, and the bass looks like the Jb bass , TIGHT AND percurssive, but not Solid and tight enough for me. the difference between the Jb and DD bass and overal sound is a sharp/dry overal sound from dd, and a more bright, sometimes harsh overal sound form the JB.

can anyone confirm that tonal caracteristics or Correct me?
i installed it in my Charvel fusion deluxe.(poplar or basswood body, i don´t know exactly which wood is , until now.) maple neck and rosewood fingerboard.

It looks like i´m a AII man
i liked the tone of the CUSTOM CUSTOM, but i still want a solid and Tight bass. that The CC doesn´t HAVE.
i´ll have to ORDER a custom shop one.
and About the Hot rails
it has PERFECT, I SAID PERFECT mids and highs. JUST the way i was dreaming.
BUT, it´s bass are FUZZ PEDAL Like, buzzzz, fuzzzzzz, shiiiiiiii, and i didn´t like it. so, i´ll have to order a custom shop hotrails too.. but this time, it´s hard to define what kind of bass i´ll want. i´ll have to play more duncan neck pups like the rails series to see which one have the bass tone that i desire.

No, sorry, I stil haven't figured out how to post clips on here.

I did install it in a friend's American Roadhouse strat (alder with a maple fretboard) and it sounds great clean or dirty. It's fat and round but with enough sparkle to cut through, and it sounds great for smooth leads in the neck position.

There's more air to the mids than a HR, so the cleans will be better.

As far as the bridge pickup is concerned, have you tried a Dimarzio Super Distortion? I got an old, old one in a box of parts, and it sounds great. It's highs and mids remind me of the Custom Custom, but the lows are reproduced with more authority than the CC.

The bass is tighter than the CC, but more prominent than (and not as "twangy" as) a JB, and when you palm mute, it has a nice "chunk".

I'd be glad to send it out to you, but my brother is using it in his strat at the moment, along with a pair of Fender CS 62's.

He's been talking aout trying something different in it, and if he does, I'll ship it out to you for a couple of weeks.

I think a big part of the reason you dislike pickups is your amp setup. A great amp can make a crappy pickup sound good, but a great pickup can't make a crappy amp sound good.

That´s True
but i always try my pickup in different amps
but i use it in the Crate , and if i like it, i let the test with other amps for another day. and if i dislike, i try to test them in a lot of other amps.
as much amps as i can.
but you know, no ones here has good amps, and a tube amp is hard to find.

Yeah man I agree with DeadSkinSlayer3, I think you'd have a lot better luck finding great tone if you saved up for a ripping high gain tube head and cab. It may be hard to find in Brazil, but you have the internet and that's the first bold step into finding alot of gear. I think all your fuzzy bass and flabby bass tones are coming from your rig and not from the pickups, while I believe that the CC doesn't have a very good bottom end to it I could still make it solid with a little bit of tweaking. That was with my Solid-state Fender Princeton 112 plus.

Remember, an amp doesn't have to be tube to be good. As long as you can pull the sounds you want out of it, then it's serving it's purpose.

I've heard amazing tones coming from Transtube Peavy's, of all things; and some of the Kustom SS amps sound decent, along with Marshall's VS series and some mid-priced Randalls, if metal is your thing.

As a matter of fact, lots of famous guitarists play SS amps and get great tones from them. A few of them include B.B. King (Lab series combos), the Edge (Randall combos, along with Vox's), Mike Tempesta (VS100 along with DSL's), and many others I'm forgeting to mention.

That´s interesting facts, but i already know that. AH...... PLEASE, don´t get me wrong or arrogant, sometimes i think in portuguese and translate in english, and the words can be erroneous translated in a arrogant atmosphere.
i just wanted to say that i consider what you all posted here.
and i know that good tone doesn´t come only from Tube amps.
and i know too that i must get a better gear..
i´m still planning to get a 6505 Head.(i´ll buy just the head and Bother other peoples cabinet 4x12) cause i can´t afford both.
i thought about a Marshall VS 100 or VS 80. but i don´t know
after i own that CRATE GX 80, and using it for some years... , CORRECT ME IF I´M WRONG, but Solid state amps tends to get saturated and Muddy,m after 1:30 our of playing. Both live or in the studio. and, IN MY head, i think it happens to ALL Solid state.
is that true or false?

Not all of them.

Try the higher wattage Peavey Transtube Supreme heads (around 200 watts, I beleive), or even the high watt Randall (300 watts or so) heads.

Usually, the more robust the output stage is, the better tones you will get from SS.

If you can find one, a Tech 21 300 watter might just be the rig for you. It has 300 watts, three channels, and a quality analog preamp that's voiced to SansAmp specs.

Yeah man I agree....not every amp has to be expensive or even tube to sound good but there are better setups to be had out there IMO than putting a distortion pedal into a Crate...and for not too much money either. There are Peavey Ultra heads that pop up on Ebay from time to time that go for roughly $300 USD...that's about 5-6 new Duncans and it's also the same head that the Peavey XXX was based off of.


I say, save up and get a new setup, THEN see where your tone lies.....the amp is going to have MUCH more difference in your tone than the sometimes subtle changes between pickups.

WFD, you might want to try Dimarzios instead of Duncans, if the dry character of the sound disturbs you. Dimarzio has more models that are low-mid based, with a little bit pulled-back highs, so that the overall sound will have a dense and wet feel.

Or, if you have more funds to spend on pickups, you can choose a BK model that Tim will tweak to your specs so that you really get what you want.

Hey WFD, you really ought to look into a Custom/Distortion or C5/JB hybrid. Solid lows thick low mids, and good upper mids as well. BUT the high end can sound dry, but with a good cap I think you can tame it enough. Now that's with the large distortion mag, with a smaller custom mag the highs might be a bit wetter. The A5 should give you the JB high end, and the C5 thump. Now with the A2 you might be happiest though a CC/JB2 hybrid.

Like you I'm starting to wonder if I too am just an A2 man. I will soon be trying the A5 in my hybrid, then after that the A2. I'll keep you posted man.
