OK, EL84 G.A.S. Time..

this'll be my first new tube purchase, and i need some brief pointers.. because im in the UK, i'm fairly limited for choice..

however, i have heard good things about both EH EL84s and a company called harma, they have a hell of a good writeup on www.watfordvalves.com.. i just want a versatile, durable, middle-of-everything set. i can shape the EQ later, but i'd really like consistency in the sound of the tubes..

any suggestions as far as EH, Harma or any other brand goes? its for a marshall DSL401, 4x12AX7s, 4xEL84s..

cheers, guys :)

Re: OK, EL84 G.A.S. Time..

although it's not really clear on Warford's site, I believe the "Harmas" are just rebranded tubes, tested by Watford, similar to what Groove Tubes does with a lot of tubes

anyway, I suspect the EL 84 Harmas are Russian made

I still think the JJs are probably the best current production EL 84, but it's certainly possible that some people might prefer good Russian versions for their amp

As far as new production tubes go, the JJ EL84's are excellent quality.

You can get them from Bob at Eurotubes or if you need help, I can get you some as well. I now have dealer status at several places that sell parts.

Eurotubes is a no-brainer because he has tons in stock. Todd at Revolution Guitar has a lot as well.

There *has* to be a place in the UK that sells JJ/Tesla EL84's though.

Tell me your results when you fit them dude, maybe I don't need a new amp.

As Scott said, JJ EL-84s rock! I've been using mine for a while and they sound great. I wouldn't change a thing :)

Re: OK, EL84 G.A.S. Time..

There are also NOS Teslas....$40.00ea. or a pair though...They aren't JJs.

I thought the JJs were o.k., but I like Ei EL84s (and 12AX7s!)...a copy of the European Philips type and has excellent full all-around tone. And $10.00ea. locally !

I thought they had a little more bottom end, more headroom & overdrive better than the JJ...more Vox-like, which I love.

But the JJ is a good all around tube.

They're all cheap enough to experiment.....except for the Mullard, of course! :13:

Re: OK, EL84 G.A.S. Time..

you'll laugh, i have 2 old as hell mullard tubes in my DSL401 at the moment, pulled from a valve organ!

they dont match, and nor does anything else in there >.< i really want a quad!

aye - everyone raves over how watford valves test their valves till god knows when, i'm definitley up for trying a set out, they seem much cheaper than JJs too.. one for the good of the forum ;)
