OK- For REAL this time...Zoom G3n people....talk to me!

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
I re-read my original Boss MS3 post. There were a couple of Zoom comments in there so I checked out the G3n.

THIS may be the winner!

I can program whole patches with a crap ton of stuff for whole songs

I can also put 1 or more fx in 1 of 3 stomps and go to that mode.

Or...I could just make 3 patches of 3 stomps, and use them! And.....I could do this;

Patch 1 = Chorus + short Delay + Reverb
Patch 2 = Flanger + Short delay + Long delay
Patch 3 = Delay 1s + Delay 2M + Delay 3L

I could have 3 patches, that give me quick access to 6 delay settings, flange, chorus and verb!

I could also program Intro, rhythm, lead as a patch for a song!

I'm digging it....Talk to me!!!!!

I used to be hesitant about Zoom. Then about 10 years ago I got one of their handirecorders. I still use it today. If all the rest of their products are as good, then you should be fine with the G3n.

I've been rocking my old Zoom A2 with acoustic for quite a while....

M9: 6 presets per bank of 3 simultaneous effects with 4 banks.

Stomp mode is 3 effects at a time with 6 on tap.

That's double the available effects per preset in stomp mode and double the number of presets in preset mode.

I suggested you look at Zoom in the Boss thread because you seemed pretty indifferent to Line 6 and because I'd take the G3n over an ES-3; but there's no way I'd pick it over an M9.

What's it like to spend that much time typing and know that nobody cares what you are saying? Oh wait - you didn't know that....

I really dig the stompbox mode on my G5, but both modes are pretty handy.

Here's a pretty cool thing. Yeah, there are only 3 stompbox buttons showing, but you can have up to seven effects in your chain. Think of handy things to have that you don't necessarily need to turn off or on like noise gate, compressor, amp model, EQ, reverb, etc. They're all available to you, even though you may not plan to have them set to one of the stomp pedals.

The only thing I found to be a little limiting is that, in stompbox mode, the pedals assigned to buttons have to be in sequence somewhere in your chain. By that I mean if you're using 5 effects, you can't choose to assign 1, 3 & 5 to the buttons. It would have to be 123, 234, or 345.

That seven fx chain thing was pretty sweet - that's maybe the biggest reason I dig it.

I could do like a short metallic chorus for a tone, with chorus, in patch 1. Then later in the chain would be a longer chorus I could kick on/off for solos.

I watched a couple of vids on that. Rock You Like a Hurricane is a great example off a song where sometimes I want delay + reverb, then straight guitar, then chorus. That would be an easy patch to work with that.

I think I'll pass on the pedal version. I'd rather string an expression pedal out somewhere else on stage, if I want one.

Yeah it could do all that. You sure though three stomp switches would be enough for ya? It does have those extra three flat switches for bank changes or whatever it is that they do. Its cheap at $124 new too. I forgot if adding an exp pedal takes up a fx slot from the chain. I guess the g5n is more geared towards gigging somewhat but its $299 new.

$124 is mighty tempting.

The flat switches along the front are indeed for bank changes. I noticed that on the G5n compared to my G5... a vast improvement I might add. I actually modded mine so I could bank/patch up and down easier on an external pedal.

One bummer about their newer pedals, though, is that they seem to have done away with the Z-Pedal (which operates both up-and-down and side-to-side) in favor of a traditional up-and-down only expression pedal. Too bad, the Z-Pedal is a pretty handy way to control three more effects..

Interesting. I think I'll be able to get by without that. I may post a thought/opinions comparison on the Boss-MS-3, M9, and G3n.

Been an interesting adventure in shopping.
