Ok..I gotta do it...new pups for the Hamer..advice

Re: Ok..I gotta do it...new pups for the Hamer..advice

I've narrowed down my choices to just a couple really...

If I go Duncan it will be a CC bridge, and an A pro neck...

But my gut feeling is telling me DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge and a DiMarzio PAF or Air Classic in the neck.

Gotta sell the Gibson 57 CLassic/Classic+ first on the bay (Unless someone here wants em..PM me) as I ordered a Vox ToneLab SE last week and that got into the last bit of my GAS fund for the time being.

I've already got a brand new Super Distortion laying around (in double cream no less), so just the neck pup would have to be bought....I'll go black & creme for it...

bro the SD dimarzio is not going to be very open and vocal and will be very compressed
seriously from what you said you wanted the V hot paf fits the bill to a tee:beerchug:

Hey- if you need one more vote for a CC to put you over the edge, here it is. I love my CC. You can dig up assorted posts by me where I say something like the following: The highs are FAT (Artery clogging buttery smooth). The mids are killer. And for all of that smooth high end, the thing can crunch!

I mix it with a PG neck, but I'm sure it would go well with an A2P, or a 59. What I love most about it is that when you mix it with anything that has a scooped neck eq (Like the A2P - even moreso than the PG!) you can get some awesome two pup combo tones. By bringing up one pup or the other you can add mids to the neck or bass and treble to the bridge. Very cool. And it cleans up well also. I agree with whoever said it really didn't behave like a hot pup. I has some juice, though.

If you have to go DM, though, rock on. I use them also - but prefer Duncans. You clearly have a sound in your head - good luck in finding it!

That would be me. :)

I think I'm one of the few that mates it up with a Jazz neck. I love that combo. For Jeff though the A2P would be better.

Jeff,

I have a CC/A2Pro set in my Yamaha Santana and it kills... great "modern/vintage" set of pickups. The neck is smooth and sweet with a very clear tone and the bridge is fat and smooth as well with a good bite. The best part is both pickups in that guitar...great for beautiful clean tones. The CC is not overly fat as some guys woudl have you belive, it does have a good bite on the top...enough to cut through a good bit of gain...belive it or not you can do metal with the CC if your amp/fx can handle it.

I would go for that set if I were you!

Agreed...they do get very compressed under a pile of gain which for leads doesn't bother me...but they also crunch well under "medium" gain (by todays standards)... if you think Number of the Beast Era Adrian Smith with SuperDs in his Destroyer and coppertop....that kind of crunchy rhythm sound.

I haven't made any final decisions...but that crunchy late 70s early 80s SuperD into a Marshall tone ala Ace (shudder..can't belive I said that), Adrian, Dave Meniketti,Paul Chapman, and god knows who else...that is a sound I adore.

I hate to say it cos I've had good experiences with them in other guitars, but the 59s in my Hamer just sound horrible. They are crisp, and clear and have good note definition, but just are lacking any kind of growl and attitude...they also crap out under gain compared to the BBpros...they sound too "high fi" or sterile at crunch ,and then turn to mush as the gain goes up. I think they really need to be in a Paula that has more low end and low mids= to beef up the sound.

So I'm at a loss. I love the Gibson BB pros, but not sure I wanna go that route, I'm worried about them having the same problem the 59s do (i.e. they need to be in a Paula).I want crunch. The BBPros crunch...and they sing, and they bite. The 59s sing a bit in this guitar, twang like crazy and that's about it.(BTW, acoustically the guitar is just brilliant...I know it's not an issue with the axe)

Most of you know the tones i'm going for...Thin Lizzy to mid 80s Iron Maiden. Pup has to be warm but have some "crunch" to it. I don't want smooth or compressed...so CCs, Antiquities and Seth's are out. PGs are out too as they are brighter than 59s, and the 59s are at my limit for that.

I've been contemplating the following for the bridge:

DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge (crunch like hell, but I know cleans will suck)

Duncan Custom (same issue and compressed)

I'd rather not go THAT high in output, and really don't want to go ceramic if I can help it.

Some other things I've been throwing around in my brain:

DiMarzio V Hot PAF (worried about too much high end again)

Screamin' Demon (anyone ever put these in a Paula or similarly made instrument?)

Hell I've even contemplated a JB due to the added mids and the "crunch" factor.

Someone told me to search out a 70s/early 80s DiMarzio Super...anyone know what kind of price these are gonna run on Ebay?

I also have a DiMarzio AZ, Gibson 57 classic plus and 57 classic laying around...

TOO MANY FRIGGIN CHOICES

BTW...can't afford BKs or other "custom" pups now, otherwise I'd go that route. Need to keep prices in the Duncan/DiMarzio range (i.e 60-90 bucks a pop).

once I decide on a bridge then I guess I'll try and match a neck....

ughhh...I hate this.....:baby:

CALGON TAKE ME AWAY

The V Hot is not a bright pup. I put one in a Wolfie Special and it tamed that guitar's brightness, it also has good mids and a useable bottom. Before I had these, I was a 59 fanantic, but since I put the Virtual Vintage PAF and VVHot combo in my wolfie, this is becoming my favorite combo to date.

Also I have a 70's Super D just laying around. Pm me if interested

I agree about the V hot paf not being real bright like a 59
it has all the paf mojo but more attitude and more CRUNCH:beerchug:
