I Like the CC in a strat but it was too dark in my mahogany LP...This 59B with an A2 is really great...I'm finding the gainy stuff is every bit as good as the clean chimey stuff and I keep note clarity...With a LP I find it's more highs I need when playing to cut..I find myself dialing back on the tone control a bit to shave some highs when playing by myself..This will be good because I'll have some extra highend on the tone knob, once I set my amp's controls also of course..

If Jumpmarine didn't already have my A5 Hybrid 59/Custom,I'd let you try that out....I think it's better with an A2 magnet though? The Hybrid is a perfect pickup right between what we all love in the 59's clean chime and a Custom's stronger grind and mids....I still like the Hybrid and like Pete says,I may end up missing it soon. And this is why I keep alot of pickups around to mess with, though I still lack Seth and Antiquity pickups..
I like the CC in a strat too but I LOVE it in my LP. It's just dripping with Mark Kendall tone now through my Marshall.

Let me ask you this. Do you think an A2 59 would be too bright in a strat (alder) that has a maple fingerboard? I'd probably be using a 250k volume pot.

Once I get it I'll keep that in mind. :fing2:

The CC is my fav bridge pickup so it's always in the running...lol. But like you, I'm wanting to go more vintage output, at least on this guitar. I know it will still scream though. An APS-1 is going in the neck. Thing is, I was pretty set on going with the CC in it again but hearing what you have to say about the A2 '59 sounds just about what I'm looking for.

Erik,

I agree. The A2/'59 sounds like a great idea. If you haven;t checked out a Seth that is also worth considering. It's vinatge, but has a little something extra in the inital attack and in the midrange. I had a CC for a long time in my LP/SG, but once I tried the Seths I had laying around, I was hooked.

No....A 59 is a great pickup in a strat and the A2 would make it even smoother, rounder, and it's always going to be toppy in a strat compared to a LP...You might even have to try the stock 59 first because of the 250k pot or a 500k with the A2 magnet?

Exactly Jeff and it's what I heard when listening to Seymour's samples...I didn't feel like spending a $100 on the Seth to experiment and I thought the 59B would be close enough with the A2 magnet and it is....It sounds really great...It's got plenty of highend, but it grinds, plays great clean with nice chime and I Love the clarity...

If you listen to the mids between the Seth bridge and the 59B on the dirty sound samples, you'll hear what my stock 59 was missing in the mids...The Seth has this rounder, smoother, low mid crunch I heard on the samples that I really liked...I think I have that now?

Ok. Gotcha. I'll try it stock with A5 and then go from there. I have a Little 59 now in my real Strat but I know the full size 59 will sound different.

I've never used a Lil 59 but I'd say they were close, but it's not going to sound exactly like the fullsized 59 version...Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my JB Juinor was like that..

I'll just need to scare up a '59b first.I'm sure there are tons of used ones around. I'll take the A-2 out of a JB I put it in a while back. Can't wait.

Jeff - dig the Avatar, I'm a Cream nut myself. Do you find that your Seth's smooth out your SG's tone and make it real warm, creamy and buttery? I have '59's and they are nice, but I really want to get close to EC's "Fresh Cream"/"Live at the GRande Ballroom" tones, so I'm thinking the Seth's may be the move. What's your opinion?

The tone is warmer and rounder with more mids, but I won't say it's buttery...The tone still has quite a bit of cutting presence unless you dial the tone control back a bit...The pickup sounds like the 59B but with more mids, less tightness, but it's like the lows and highs are about the same...Really it's the mids being more out front that I notice the most..

Thanks. Just saw Cream at MSG last month...I can die a happy man now:dance:

In answer to your question...yes, the Seths add warmth and I can get the old Clapton/SG tone (think live "Spoonful") pretty well. Even though Clapton's SG had alnico-5s in it most likely, the Seths get the tone right. If you listen to various Cream boots from the time he was using the SG (Pre-335/Firebird era), you'll hear differences in brightness. I guess it depended on where he was playing. For me the definitive tone is on Live Cream, the live cuts from Wheels of Fire, & on the Farewell video where he's demonstrating his technique to the interviewer. Great stuff.

Thanks for the description. How does it handle gain? Aside from my Cream/ZZ Top forays, sometimes I like to try an dial in an early EVH tone and the 59's are nice with that.
