Ok!!! my review on the Patb-3 pup!!!

alright,got my duncan patb-3 blues saraceno pickup about a week and a half ago.put it in my basswood ibanez rg565 in the bridge slot.the guitar has an all maple neck/fretboard.after lots of time to thoroughly play this pup,i can finally give my review on it...in a word-"awesome".this IS the perfect pup that fits in between the '59b & the C5 pickups.i've tried both of those and liked 'em both.the 59b was great,but i wanted just a little more mids and slightly hotter wind.the Custom 5 was an excellent pup,also,but it was just a little too boomy.very similiar to the '59b,but too BIG of a jump on the low end(meaning bass!).plus with a rating of about 15k,it's entered the "compression" zone a bit and loses that open paf vibe somewhat.still a great pickup,but not quite what i am looking for.back to the patb-3.my pup measured at 9.2k.it's got the same open paf tone & excellent clarity as the '59b.as far as the e.q.,if the 59b has: bass=5/mids=3/treble=9 ,then the patb-3 has: bass=6/mids=4/treble=8 .that's the way it seems to me.it has plenty of bass(without being boomy),good mids(killer grind due to low mids),definately NO sharp upper mid spike(like the jb),and nice singing,rounded highs.also,being slightly overwound,this pickup has a really good crunch under high gain and through-the-roof harmonics,both,similiar to the screamin' demon.this pup squeels with ease like a little piggy and grinds like a steel mill.does anything from blues to metal,no problem.really a great pup for a floyd-rose equipped guitar that is on the brighter,thin sounding side!!! this one is a "keeper". :dance: if anyone has ANY questions-feel free to ask!!!

Yeah the PATB is a cool pickup...I am looking for an excuse to build another strat, I'd do a PATB & a couple singles....heck I have the pickguard! It's almost done

Ya know, I almost posted a similar thread this week, but I wanted a little more time to evaluate the Blues I picked up over the weekend. I stuck it in my Wolfgang and I absolutely love it. I've been curious for long time but held off because of all the surgery you have to do to make them fit in a Wolf. But now that guitar has the sound I've been trying to coax out of it since I got it. Sounds like a Les Paul (yes, really) through my Super Lead and it actually mated surprisingly well with my DSL too, though I don't play that amp much anymore. The Blues is very smooth and filled in exactly the holes in the mids that I was looking for.

Now I need to find the right neck pickup to match...

What all was involved in getting it to fit into the Wolfie? I imagine trimming the mounting tabs a bit to fit into the angled pickup route, but what else was there?

hey Dave Z- i can easily say "YES",i did really like this pup!!! fits the guitar,my playing style(hard rock/metal) and is very versatile.as i play it more & more,i seem to dig it more & more.it's got me hooked.cant lose with this one.after many duncans & dimarzios-this baby's staying in my Ibanez!!! finally!

glad to hear you are so happy GW...it was a hard decision for me to sell mine, and I'll get another some day. For some reason it was doing wierd stuff with my AX85 HiOctane....awesome with the Cal Dreamer tho (Dlx Reverb clone)

What all was involved in getting it to fit into the Wolfie? I imagine trimming the mounting tabs a bit to fit into the angled pickup route, but what else was there?

The mounting tabs need to be rounded, so that they look like the tabs on a Dimarzio pickup. You also need to enlarge the mounting holes on the tabs so that you can use the stock Wolfgang pickup screws. I don't think you could use the Duncan screws unless you wanted to fill and redrill the mounting holes. If you plan on doing a lot of pickup swapping on a Wolfgang, I'd advise having a luthier trim a little bit of wood from the pickup route so that it can accomodate pickups with square mounting tabs.

YES. Argh. The Custm Shop S-Deco5 is similar in wind... single conductor tho, and dunno if you can get it Fspaced, and we're on dangerous ground here so let's shut up before Evan 86's our sorry butts...

The way the Parallel Axis series pickups are designed, you should be able to use them on any guitar regardless of the spacing, as if they were blade pickups.

I had to mod the mounting tabs, but the rest of the plate didn't fit into the Wolf's pickup cavity either - the baseplate on the Wolf pickups is much narrower. I had to remove a small amount of wood from each side of the cavity in order for the entire pickup to fit, and I chipped the finish in the process:smack: . Oh well, now it's got some character I guess, and actually I have to say that the tone is worth it. I have a pretty early Wolfgang, so maybe they've improved this now.

Hmm, I've been back and forth about changing pickups in my Wolf for a while. I think the Blues TB would sound awesome in there. I'm just not sure I want to go to all that trouble. Are there any DiMarzios that come close to the tone of the Blues TB? They should drop right in, right?

It's not really a blade pickup, it has polepieces, but they're of the parallel axis design. It should still work fine in a standard-spaced guitar, but I wouldn't expect it to line up with the strings any better than a regular trembucker.
