Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

Wish I could more help. To me the nazgul is a love it or hate it kind of pickup. I feel it has a good impression initially, but soon it causes fatigue. Hope it all works out

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

I’m going to dig in more this weekend if I have time. Worst case, I’ll bring it to my local guy.

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

I have a Nazgul in my Schecter (tuned down a half-step) and I love it. It's vicious, with a great mid body, and it chugs like nothing on earth. It is def a metal rhythm pickup, though, and that's what I use it for. For cleans, leads, or anything else, the Sentient does the job fine. I hope you're able to get this wiring issue sorted out!

I decided that I’m going to bring it to my local shop. Truth be told, I’m a novice when it comes to this.
I’ve installed a couple of pickups without any issues, but troubleshooting this is a little beyond my current knowledge.
Thanks!!

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

Dropped it off today for some professional surgery.
I know when I’m beaten!!!

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

It's always good to know when to say when.

As for the Nazgul's tone, I've never had one, but I never really understand how a pickup can be too harsh in the highs or upper mids because those are such easy things to adjust after the fact, like with boost/od pedals and of course the amp itself,,,,,,,,granted there can sometimes be a combination of all the "wrong" elements in one's rig, but that's not the norm IME.

(pickups in general, not talking about the Nazgul here)
The low-end's character is where I find things to get harder to dial-in or out, although dialing-out too much lows is easy as long as they are still as percussive as desired.
If the lows are just too spongy then it's hard to find anything that will take them into the stiff and percussive zone. You can "tighten" them but that usually means just reducing the lows in general, not really changing their character.

The Nazgul usually wouldn’t be the type of pickup I would generally gravitate toward. I’m not typically a “metal” guy. More of a rock/hard rock guy.
With the cover band, a couple of the guys wanted to do some heavier material that would require the 7string and I wanted to go with something more metal for that guitar.
The Nazgul was suggested several times in this thread and I came across a good price on Reverb so I figured what the hell.
Choices for a soap bar (active mount) style pickups are somewhat limited to begin with...

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

I'll be curious to hear your opinions on it in the hard rock context once it's rewired.
Some people say it's muffled and dark but every demo/comparison I watched sounded clear and percussive, which makes more sense anyways being it's designed to be good at low tunings with high gain.

One of the reasons I went with the Nazgul is that even in low tunings I could hear plenty of mids (in youtube demos) and the high end was present and not shrill.
If I had my choice I would have went with a JB, but they aren’t made in a soap bar style and somebody above had mentioned he had heard the Nazgul described as a JB on steriods. Seemed like it was worth a try.

Re: Ok...my turn for pickup recommendations.

I still have the Nazgul, like I said, imho it sounds great but then it wears on me for some reason. I tell you this as well, may sound crazy but if your intonation or tuning is off just the smallest amount, the Naz will let you know more than any other pickup I have yet to try. That being said, it really does come into its on when tuned down. I keep that guitar down half step and it seems to love the lower tunings

This one is going into a 7 string so hopefully it will be right at home.
Most of my other guitars are 1/2 step down...I just love how that sounds.
The band im playing with now prefer it tuned down as well.
