Ok, so I hate my D-Sonic...

Comes with the EBMM JP6 guitar and sometimes it's nice for some metal stuff but it's not even that great for that, but.....

I like the neck and the split sounds and I'm worried about swapping pickups and screwing the split sound up and the fact that I want a Duncan and not a Dimarzio in there.

So what effect could putting a Duncan EVH/'78 in my guitar have? Bad to mix Dimarzio and Duncans? Could the split sound turn out horrible?

Thanks.

Re: Ok, so I hate my D-Sonic...

I find the middle very stratty, chimey. Neck isn't super clean but it's smooth and got that OOOHHH sound. It's a great guitar but many have said get the original JP6 instead of the D-Sonic version, I didn't really have a choice.

I play my $500 Ibanez with Duncan Designs and it doesn't play as smooth obviously but the bridge pickup is way more what I like.

The D-Sonic looks funny already, so if you don't mind the look, put a P-Rails in there. The split sound with the rail coil will be very stratty and glassy. If you want it to look more traditional, you can try the Alternative 8. Both of those pickups split well, and are robust with a wide frequency response, good for that kind of guitar.

+1

I have an Ibanez with a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck and a Duncan Alt 8 in the bridge. They mix well and the middle sound is chimey and great for cleans.

I have a les paul with a FRED in the neck and a C5 in the bridge. No problem with them mixing at all . . . though they definitely have different "textures" or "characters", apart from their different tones they just respond differently, but in a good way

Whoa. Mixing Duncans & DiMarzios is like mixing ammonia & bleach; it sets off an unpleasent chemical reaction. There was one guy that lost a couple fingers on his right hand...

Okay, back to reality. Have you checked out the specs of the'78 (ohms, resonant peak, magnet, EQ, output, etc), and compared that to other bridge PU's you like? How well-researched are you going into this? As far the split sound, have you decided for sure about the neck PU? If not, that's a moving target, & what does or doesn't work with the neck now may soon be irrelevant. What is it you like about the split now? Could it be improved? What are the specs of the current PU's? Where would a '78 take you tonewise compared to where you are now? I wouldn't worry so much about the brand of PU as I would about it's sound. I'm not seeing this as quite well thought out as I would have hoped. Might want to hit the brakes & nail some things down first.

I have one guitar which after a couple of pickup swaps has ended up with Air Norton neck and Custom Custom bridge pickups. It set off a nasty rock n' roll attitude. I like it!
