Nice playing! But I do agree with Erik: to much hum and noise.

Whenever I check out a You Tube home video of a guitarist and it starts out like that (lots of hum, hiss and noise before he even starts playing) I know what's coming next:
that generic bagful of angry bumble bee guitar tone and, usually, lots of guitar gymnastics.

Can you do those tricks with a little less overdrive, hum and hiss? You know, EVH didn't use nearly as much distortion as most of the guys who try to play like him.

Nice playing - just a bit generic tone wise.

I like the V-30's better - and for the same reasons that everyone else who liked them better liked them better.

Not to derail this thread but is there a big difference between running an X pattern and top/bottom combination?

Well I used to run my Green Berets (like Greenbacks) in an X pattern with a pair of Vet 30s. I found myself partial to the sound of the GBs. So I rearranged them so that they would be on top, and now I find that I hear them more prominently than I did before. If you're curious, I would say lower powered speakers sound better on the top row, or whichever speakers have a bit more clarity/cut/brightness, whatever.

But that's also really just for me. Your audience will usually hear the BOTTOM row of speakers because they're at eye level with THEM (maybe).

Anyway, that's why I suggested he put the SB on top and V30 on bottom. He prefers the SB, so if he wants to hear them more, he should put them on top. That's all.

I appreciate your experience man, thank you. I'd want the concert patron to receive the best tone instead of me I'm thinking. I've played venues where I thought I sounded horrible on stage but after the show I was complimented on tone. Next time I play a gig I want to get a long cable, stand where the crowd would be and adjust my EQ that way.

The V30's are nasty to my ears, huge mid hump that doesn't sound BAD just not my taste. I want a dark tone. As for the quality of the clip. The V30 clip was done loud, SB's not even close to loud. The gain was at 3 o clock on gear 2 od. The sloppy noise would be waht I talked about, it showing every little thing and how hard it is getting used to it. BUT! Next weekend is a show and I'll get to film it live and loud!

Yeah. The X pattern is better if you want a more uniform sound. If top and bottom is like putting whipped cream on your pie, the x pattern is like using a blender.

Nice tones all around. I too prefer the small blocks - the v30s sound nasal to me too. But that's when you're playing alone... I'd have to hear a full band mix to know which would really be better.

I also listened to your Splawn vs. 5150 video and found the 5150 way better. Bit of a surprise there.
