Sorry if ive made any other person feel like this too, but im just interested in learning how these different players get their tones. Im not chasing all their different tones, that would just be silly cos i ask that about a lot!

I just want to learn how different players get their tones to build up my knowledge database ;)

Early Quo used vox ac30's (wound-up, of course), I believe (rockin' all over the world etc.) with their usual scrap-heap teles (stock pups, and very heavy strings). I think they made a change to marshalls soon after. Apparently they "invented" aged guitars in the 80's when they asked Fender's custom shop to beat-up some teles because they looked "too new".

You should experiment with different styles and tones! That's the way it should be :)

Get a nice tube amp, a guitar with medium output pickups and crank that amp. That's classic rock. There weren't a ton of different effects pedals or custom pickups back then. You might stick a treble booster in front of the amp if you want.

I've found that you can get a sound reasonably close to most "classic rock" tones with a very simple setup. That's all they had at the time. You need a decent tube amp cranked loud enough to get some tube breakup, I set the eq curve in a V shape (bass 7-8, treb 7-8, and mids around 5. Keep the gain moderate. Doesn't really matter too much about a partictular amp. Marshall was the mainstay, but Peavy, Hiwatt and even a bunch of Fenders with tube screamers or other distortion pedals.

I prefer more vintage sounding pups again, because that's what classic rockers played in the early days. A 59' or a PG or a Seth or an APH will get you right there in a solid body guitar. Play in the bridge position and away you go.

Quo!!!!!! Now we're talkin' .

They're really a straight ahead Rock sound, don't use a lot of gain. A Duncan QP in a Tele pushing the limits of a Class A amp will get you as close as anything. If you are using a big modern rig make sure you have mids dialed in, keep the bottom end down a bit and the treble fairly high and I think you should be able to salt to taste from there.

AFAIK, you're after power amp distortion rather than per amp saturation

Lol, im not dumping the ENGL. Not yet anyway. Not before i record a clip of me playing it and i show you all how sh!t it sounds, then hopefully i can chase up some way to fix it. Cos with a good amp like this i shouldnt be complaining...but i am :( But that could just be cos im a whingeing biatch!

I agree with Alvin Lee Fan. I don't know what pickups you are using but the higher output pickups don't usually have that "classic" personality.
A PAF style pickup and a cranked blackface, ac30 or plexi are great together.
If you use high output pickups with a high gain amp then you end up with distorted distortion :D

Effects without true bypass can comprimise your guitar's pure tone also.
