Okay next question...MIJ strat or fully decked out warmoth strat?

Re: Okay next question...MIJ strat or fully decked out warmoth strat?

Warmoth, hands down.
You may also want to look into a bolt-on Carvin, too.

Warmoth, no question. I'm not a big fan of basswood bodies, small frets, and thin necks, so a MIJ Strat would be out of the question if it were me.

My basswood bodied MIJ 62RI sounds spectacular and has a big, beefy neck, though the frets are on the skinny side.

For the same price, I too would go with Warmoth.

Warmoth. You get what you want. If you're going to spend the money, do it right and get everything the way you want.

So who is offering up a warmoth strat for the same price as an MIJ?

One word of caution: If you are buying a used warmoth strat, take note of who painted and assembled the guitar. A guitar finish can look good in an online photo but absolutely horrible up close. If it was painted by warmoth, no problem.

Is the neck a "Vintage" or "Modern Vintage" construction, or is it a "Warmoth Construction" with the double expanding truss rod? Either of the first two should be fine, but the "Warmoth Construction" really eats tone based on my comparisons.

+1 most jap strats can be had much cheaper than a warmoth.

Angus - FWIW that's almost certainly "Warmoth Construction" with the compound radius. The pau ferro fingerboard would add some snap compared to rosewood.

I would ask who finished the body and did the assembly just like KMC suggested. Also, ask if any fretwork has been done. KMC, JohnJohn and others have direct experience, but I think it's even easier to mess up a compound radius neck than one with a straight radius.

This is what the warmoth guy wrote back to me in an email, please can all the experts help me interpret this and give me their opinions:

"Hi, yes the guitar is as good as it sounds. I've put it up against an assortment of fenders and musicmans, and everytime I walked away couldn't believe how much better this strat sounds. I'll send you some sound files late to-nite as I have a rehearsal to go to to-nite. The guitar was Assembled by The must trustworthy and experienced guitar repairer in Toowoomba and the body was custom painted by a company called Rockabilly Restorations. There are only 2 things in this country that are this colour. The owners hot rodded muscle car and this guitar. The finish is hard, but relatively thin to allow the body to resonate.
The guitar doesn't come with a case, though I can arrange one for $100 from my local music store. otherwise the guitar will be shipped packed in bubblewrap in one of the boxes that most wholesalers ship their guitars in."
