I never read discussion about this pickup (and sorry if i missed any recent or past discussion, but i cant remember the last time someone talked about this).

So what can it do? How hard does it rock? How is it?

Go nuts!

It rocks hard but it's not real high in output. It's got a vintage vibe to it but with a hi-fi sound....like a modern sound to it. The Duncan description for it says it has bite and growl and I know that sounds silly...but when you hear it compared to other pickups.....it really does.

To me it's like a slightly overwound 59B. Though the six hex screw polepieces give it a little differant quality to the highs that's hard to describe. I like this pickup alot and recommend it to guys looking for an alnico 5 pickup that is slightly hotter than a 59B but not as overwound as a Custom 5 or JB. Lew

You can go to www.twilight-odyssey.com, or http://www.soundclick.com/bands/wri...ic&bandid=169000&bandnamesave=twilightodyssey for some tracks using the Demon.

How can I describe the Demon? I'll describe it by comparing it to the JB!
Compared to the JB, the Demon has less lower midrange, upper bass "hump" in it, which I think you may call 'warmth'. Thus, it seems to be more brighter and airy. Fer solos, I prefer the Demon. Fer riffing, the JB. The low end has a nice growl to it, very tight, but once again, not what I would call abundant. The treble may or may not be considered tilted upwards, because I never turn the Hi EQ over 3-4 on my amps.

When played clean, the JB exudes a kind of nice, neutral sound that is very pleasing: Not too much quack, not too percussive or bright. By comparison, the Demon is brighter, thinner, and has more presence and attack. Harmonics are a breeze with this pup, even played clean.

When overdriven, the JB becomes a swaggering beast, with lots of grunt and midrange punch. The demon reminds me of a rapier: very fast, sharp, and cutting. It's not overly bright, but has more "growl" to it than grunt. It takes more gain to get the Demon to distort your amp than the JB.

Personally, the Demon is my favourite pickup in the whole world! Hope you found these explainations helpful. Please listen to my clips for sonic examples of what I'm talking about. Some of the solos on the soundclick site are a Jem loaded with DMZ Breed pups. You will notice immediately which are which, I think.

EDIT: LOL, Lew's description is shorter and basically the same conclusion I draw!! :D

Re: Okay, so what does the screamin' demon actually sound like?!?!?!?

very good description guys...should the admins read this i suggest this thread goes in the vault along with the other pickup reviews because there is nothing in there about the screamin demon yet.

Unless more people want to make contributions first ;)

Re: Okay, so what does the screamin' demon actually sound like?!?!?!?

The Demon is a tempermental little bugger. :17: I find the Demon to have a good amount of bass on the E, A, and D strings. Just short of boomy. The G, B, and high E strings are bright. Too bright for me. I had to mess with the pickup height and polepieces alot to get a good sound. I know I have probably said this a thousand times, but I recommend changing out the hex screws for regular slotted screws. I think it evens out the string-to-string balance and tames the inherent brightness of the high strings. Maybe the difference in my perception and Odessey's are the amps we are using. I am using a 30w combo with the bass and trebble cranked (you have to on this amp!) I found ample bass response with this pickup.
