Old 59b vs new 59b w/RCA5 or something else.

Re: Old 59b vs new 59b w/RCA5 or something else.

I've got a couple of giutars that I put A4's into the neck pickups. One is a 59n that I put a polished one into, the other is an SH-6n that I put a roughcast into. In both cases they helped get a more balanced sound, daresay even vintagey.

A4's are unoriented, so they have a little more flavor to them than a polished A5.

I have an A4 in a Seth Lover bridge that is killer, a PAF wind, about 8.5K resistence.
Still sticking with a Seth Lover with a A4, UOA5, or RCA5, all good choices. And for hotter than PAF, still sticking with a 59/Custm Hybrid, mag change or not.

The 59n is absolutely beautiful as it is right now. Great for Cleans, blues, and leads. I personally didn't like the A4 in the 59 in my Epiphone Les Paul. I always have the magnet to try out down the road though. I preferred the A3, but it's a different sound entirely than the A5. The my Hamer's 59n seems to be less bassy, or atleast the guitar is so.

It's the bridge that needs some tuning to match the neck. It's just too hot and well a JB. I love the JB sound for harder styles, and I'll probably throw this old one into a different guitar down the road.

UOA5 vs. RCA5
OK, I tried out 2 Seth Lovers, 1 with an UOA5, the other with a RCA5. Both were roughcast. Both were in similar mahogany only bodies. SG and a Les Paul Jr.- all electronics and set up exactly the same. Same distance to strings, both open coil. Both measured 8.2K.
The RCA5 in the SG had a HARSHER sound to it. It also lacked some note separation on chords, and "seemed" louder. I also thought it sounded a touch more distorted.
The UOA5 in the Les Paul Jr. had a nicer, more pleasing sound. The notes of a chord could be heard more individually. It was not harsh like the RCA5. It "seemed" not quite as loud.
So my favorite between the two is obviously the UOA5.
These were played through a Blues Jr. - No gain, clean with the amp on 3. treble was on 5, mids on 3, bass off. No reverb. The differences I heard were obvious to me.
I did not try my RCA4 as I need to use the same mahogany body to get a good side by side difference. I will try the RCA4 in the SG to try against the UOA5 in the Les Paul Jr. My memory says the RCA4 sound is somewhere between these two. I am now an UOA5 convert.

In my experience (and to my tastes, of course) UA5 in a 59B is just right. I agree it doesn't seem quite as loud as an oriented A5 though.

I love all the humbucking pickups I have found and narrowed down to four, also narrowing down the mags I like too,
but I would like to try 1 more, a 59bridge with a UOA5.
Single coils are a different story for a different thread.

Definitely worth trying. I really think that the '59's in the 'Vintage Blues Set' should have had an UOA5 in the bridge and an A4 in the neck. That's a richer, more vintage sound, and would have expanded the Duncan PAF line with no additional cost.
