Yes you got it right. Old gear can procure as much excitement as new stuff.
I just re-discovered my Marshall Valvestate 8080 from the early 90's. How could have I not realise earlier all the tonal possibilities packed in this, I have to admit, quite big box?
It has been a while I didn't play it and man, I completely re-learned how to use it. For some those of you who have seen in the past week my threads on fuzz and distortion effects... Well I'll still be having a look to what's on offer, in case I find something that blow me away. But I have all the palette of sound I do need with my amps to get a smile on my face. The LC15R is for the breaking up sound of the valve and the Marshall for the distortion and fuzzy sounds.
The secret of the greatness of this amp: the contour knob. Ok it is a marshall but it allows you to go from a pretty fuzzy set up (it gets really nasty when I turn off the tone knobs of the Epi) to what I would call an entry level metal. Well, plenty metal enough to get a nice sound to play some Alice in Chains, even with the set of '59.
Then, you got plenty of level of overdrive / disto between the OD1 /OD2 switch and the gain knob to choose from. Bliss for ZZ Top, Aerosmith and Velvet Revolver.
Then I might have to play around with teh clean sound to if I can get something more inspiring, but today, paired with my chorus pedal it was quite nice for clean AIC stuff.
Ok, now I am up on the web to get more info on this "antiquity".
BTW, one last thing: is it a known fact that the younger you are, the more treble deaf you are? I dialed in really nice set ups this afternoon, and they pretty much all implied loads of mid, a good amount of bass... and the treble rolled off. When I first used this amp I was putting way more treble then this... But it must have been hear drilling :argh:
