Any one use these?

Specifically these models:

J-80
J-85
J-90
J-95

If you do what guitars/woods do you use them in, and what are the characteristics.

I just got a J-90 and I love it.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Alot of players love them. I have 2 charvel 4s and pulled the J90 humbucker out of both. I thought they were alittle bland. I still have the stock single coils in both tho.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

U wanna sell em ha ha.... what exact didnt you like about them and what are the woods of the charvels 4s?

I currently have mine in a Jackson Stelth made of basswood

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I always thought the wood was poplar, but have heard its basswood.. I just thought they were kind of dull. They didnt sound bad, just didnt have mojo.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I Really like the sound of it right now... It has the output of a Custom, Leads sound like a JB maybe with a A2, Rhythm sounds really crunchy and tight.
The Model I have has a Ceramic Magnet which explains the Tightness, but for some reason the leads sound creamy.

The pickup seems very balenced, which may seem like it has no Mojo I guess, but I am really digging it for rhythm stuff.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I have a J90C in a Charvel Fusion Deluxe (Charvels often came with Jackson pickups) and really like it. I think the J90 was the original and was not liked so much. I think it had Alnico magnets and then they made the J90C with ceremic mags and it's really popular among Jackson/Charvel fans. Great pickup!

I also have a Jackson Fusion XL that had a J85 in it that I didn't care for much. I replaced it with an SD Distortion. That guitar also has J200R's (Dual Rail humbuckers in single coil size) in the neck and middle postions that are OK but I may change them eventually.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I have heard that most of the other models are not that good, especially with the Alnico magnets.

This J90C i have combines everything I like about all the Duncans!

Many players love them bro! Nothing wrong with it if you do! Glad it works for you! I liked the clean look, I just needed something else

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I think I have a JE10, and it's the best humbucker I've ever had in any guitar.

From a cheap JS20

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Unfortunatly the cover doesnt fit on mine! I read the USA ones only fit the jackson pickup ring, which its kinda anoying, but it has black screws which make it look kinda stelthy.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I'd like to piggyback on this post...

I have an old Charvel Fusion, but with two humbuckers. I'm not sure which version guitar or humbuckers I have.

Does anyone know? The guitar is white with a black trem. I know it's a Fusion because it has a short scale length.

It sounds great. I love everything about it, except that I get a lot of ring from the trem springs. I tried to dampen them with tissue paper, but it still comes through. Is this a problem that is compounded because of the pickups?

Thanks...and sorry if this hijacks the thread slightly...

Aloha

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Thanks Easy Rider,

I was wondering about it. These pickups sound pretty good, but I tend to like Duncans better.

They are noticably darker, especially the J50. It can feel a little "flat", if you know what I mean. Perhaps, I'm spoiled from the Jazz in my other Charvel...

I do like the J80 quite a bit. It has a great throaty vibe with gain through my Mesa. I tend to really like this one. It doesn't sound anything like a JB, but it has this great ripping quality.

It was a great find for $200. It looks like someone bought it at the beginning of the 90's and left it under their bed for 15 years.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Nice find, I would love a fusion, but Im a lefty guitarist. The Stelth is kinda similar I think, its basically a soloist bolt on.

I think I tried the J50 and wasn't too impressed, I has the qualities of a 59 but its kinda too clean sounding, no kinda warmth.

J80 I would like to try that.

I know watcha mean about the ripping quality, really can cut on a mix, espeically with the Basswood I have on this guitar.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Old Jackson Humbuckers? Some like them, saying that they are pretty much Duncan JB sounding.
I say dump em, and dump em fast for a good Duncan pickup.
The single coil old Jacksons however are very uderrated IMO, and really nice sweet Strat sounding pickups.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

Hi Jerry I seem to like em better then JBs... altough all the JBs ive had were like 16.5-17k and I didnt like it much, this J90 I have is rated at 14.6k I think.

I agree I love the single coils on my Jackson very nice singing highs, and very straty sounding as you say.

Re: Old Jackson Pickups

I have used the J-95 (with the cover on) in the bridge position of Les Paul & SG type guitars and they sound very good. They have in the range of 16.00k to 17.50k in output but clean up well when you turn down the volume on your guitar. In my experience, the plastic cover on-or-off makes NO difference in sound quality/output. For those who are adjusting the pickup VERY close to the strings, you might hear a difference, but that's not how pickups are to be set-up anyway (magnetic pull on the strings kills sustain & causes tuning issues).
