Old Marshall JCM800 50w 2x12"

Re: Old Marshall JCM800 50w 2x12"

Thats a 2204 in a combo set up. It more than likely has 6550 power tubes and either G12T-75 or G12M-70 speakers...could be a great amp wiht a few tweaks and a speaker swap. That one is a side by side input and the slightly earlier over and under inputs seem to be more valueable, and people claim they sound better but better is a subjective. Im over and under input model recently sold for pver $1100.00 on ebay where a side by side input version recently sold for less than $650.00. I would guess that £375 is a good price however Im not sure what that comes to in dollars. As far as the tone I say try it and see what you think...if you think it's good then it is good!

For sure, but I'm always interested to know other people's experiences.

Thanks for the info man, much appreciated.

They also have a 70s Fender Twin with the original JLB speakers, and an 80s MIJ Strat going for a song...could be a dangerous shopping trip this afternoon.

Do it big my man!

Being in the UK it will probably have EL34s, not the 6550s that were used for export to America.

Try it. If you like the tone £375 is a fair price for that amp. I'd try to knock 'em down to £325 though!

Took the words right out of my mouth... LOL!

Both versions are cool amps...but the vertical output one is much better sounding, IMO. Many people think the two circuits are identical but they are not. There are subtle differences in the two versions and the power transformers (maybe the output tranny too...) seem to be different since the side by side input version I had, had higher voltages on all of the tubes. Higher voltages gave the amp a little edgier and less "woody" tone. Lew

Re: Old Marshall JCM800 50w 2x12"

Nothing to add really, Ilike the verticals better too. Give it a crank, and see what happens. There are still good tones to be had! If it has just been sat in the shop, see if you can barter them down a bit.

Thanks Lew!

Let me ask you something...I know you owned one of these amps once before...even though it's an MV amp and even though it's a combo can it still produce "classic' Marshall tones???

Oh yeah! I owned a real '70 handwired Marshall 50 watt head, an '82 vertical input JCM800 50 watt 2 x 12 and an '86 side by side input JCM800 2 x 12 all at the same time for a few years and compared them to each other alot...often playing them through the same speaker cab just so I could be sure.

I loved that '82 just as much as the '70...didn't love the '86 but it was still very good.

I did change the tubes in both of my JCM800 50 watters over to EL34's - didn't care for the 6550's. The 6550's didn't quite capture 100% of the classic Marshall tone. They were good, and "yes" they did sound Marshally, but the EL34's seem to be the way to get 100% of the classic Marshall tones we all think of when we think "Marshall".

When I think Marshall, I think Cream and Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck.

Re: Old Marshall JCM800 50w 2x12"

I've played the head version of that amp into a 4x12, It was tonal heaven. But then again, when I plugged my lil gem 1/2 watt amp into the same 4x12 cab, it sounded amazing as well (good enough that Dave almost bought it from me on the spot)... So theres something to be said for a 4x12 cab.

Re: Old Marshall JCM800 50w 2x12"

I like these amps alot. The '82 version is probably my favorite "modern" 50 watt Marshall. In fact, I just picked up a real nice '82 4010...the 1 x 12 version. It's the model 4010.

How is it as a 1x12?? I assume you're running a vintage 30??

I really dig the MV heads but I've never tried a combo.

I like 1x12 amps...they're easier on my back! It was kind of a spur of the moment purchase. I always regretted selling my 2x12 but it was not being played...to heavy and to loud for me. But this 4010 was in almost mint condition and it came with both the original G12M70 (in a box) and a new Celestion Heritage G1268. It's going straight to Bruce (http://www.missionamps.com) and getting the 6550 tubes changed over to EL34's, etc. I could do it myself, but I'd rather give Bruce the work. I'll definitely do a post on it when I get it back. Lew

+1, try and haggle (check if knobs crackle, factor in your own costs at getting it fully sexed up) and then slam that cash down!

sweet amps :D

You think you'll like that G1265 or have you even tried it yet???

You've really got me thinking about looking for one of these now...I always kind of wanted a Marshall combo but the 2x12's are way too big and bulky. This Deluxe I got from you has spoiled me to moving around small amps!

No...kidding! lol! I don't own any 2 x 12 amps anymore.

I bought the Marshall on Ebay and haven't tried it yet...had it sent directly to Bruce. I'd been looking for a nice clean one.

I don't have any experience with the G1265, but I'd like to put a G12H30 in it. Since I don't play loud I could probably get away with it...or a Vintage 30. I have a UK made version of each of those on hand that are just sitting in their boxes. I dunno what I'm going to do with it yet! lol! I just miss my other one that I sold a while back.

I mean, everyone should have at least ONE good Marshall...don't cha think?
